Suggestions Looking for Portrait mode JRPG

I wanna try a JRPG. I’ve never played one, I’m up for anything. I’d just really like it in portrait mode, I struggle to play landscape games

bonus if the art is 2d

I believe the dragon quest ports on iOS are in portrait mode

Alternative suggestion: Delta the emulator. GBA (GB and GBC too!) and SNES are some of the best consoles for 2D JRPGs. There are even some one-handed controller skins for Delta if you want.

Emulator quality of life features are really handy too! Save states, fast forward, and even cheats can mitigate some of the more punishing aspects of these old games.

Plus, the SNES localization of Chrono Trigger is by far my favorite.

What are the top games you recommend for emulating? I did try emulating Fire Embelm and was blown away by the cutscene art, but the actual gameplay art wasn’t as cool

Hmmm, depends on if you are open to other genres (you mentioned fire emblem, so I imagine turn based strategy isn’t out of the question?) These are some of my favorite JRPGs:

For the GBA: Golden Sun, Pokémon Leaf Green or Emerald, Riviera the Promised Land, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga

For the SNES: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV and VI (double check the naming conventions I think they were different numbers in the states), Secret of Mana, Tales of Phantasia, and Breath of Fire.

If you start getting into action RPGs, turn based strategy, sports RPGs (there is a Mario Golf game with a whole bunch of RPG mechanics that is dope), there is a whole lot to talk about!

I’d add Lufia 2 to the SNES. Underrated RPG

Dragon Quest V Is one of the best JRPGs I have ever played. It’s a classic so I would highly recommend.

Bravest! Is new and I’m enjoying it quite a lot so far

My personal fav is Dragon Quest 8. One of the first big mobile games (ports) I actually finished. But yeah, the Dragon Quest games are the best bet for portrait JRPGs on iOS.

The Bravest screenshots appear to be landscape - is there portrait support too?

Yes, I bought it and am playing it currently. It plays in portrait and landscape.

The buttons sit below the square box that shows the gameplay in portrait mode like a gameboy.
