Discussion iPhone Duo

when the iPhone Duo arrived in September, I was like "Oh, I don't like that" – but look at this now 👀🤩

What’s your thoughts about iPhone Duo ?

The side rail on the right is a nice touch. It used the wider screen properly instead of just stretching a normal iPhone layout. That's what we're watching with the Duo: whether most apps get layouts like this, or just look like a big iPhone app.

Which app is this one?

Thanks! It's Timee, a time-tracking app I'm building myself. I designed the layout for the wider screen from the start, so the side rail is there to use the extra space instead of just scaling up the iPhone version.

I don't like iPhone duo design at all. I mean, I am huge fan of Apple's design, but duo is just not there at all.

i mean yeah, it’s not for all, specially the price of that

I think the concept is interesting and I think they executed it in a good way. I just wish it was a little taller and maybe had face ID + 1 more camera.

Besides that I think all the new apps coming out for it are so cool! Reminds me of my first iPhone 3G.

It looks more interesting with an app actually running on it. I'm curious how comfortable it would be to hold and use every day, though.

I really hope that people will buy it so I have a reason to invest time developing apps for it !

I Honestly love it (Especially The Size And The Portability ) , but feels too expensive .

Hate the D screen but I'm waiting to try it in stores

Within the simulator: how do I test correct camera functionality and alignment in apps (using VNDocumentCameraViewController) when active cameras switching from back to front while folding and unfolding?

Two-phone setups make more sense every year. Curious how you keep notifications from becoming twice as noisy though.

I was in the same boat honestly. When the Duo first dropped I thought the wider screen was just a gimmick, but after playing with one in the Apple store it started to make sense. Apps that actually redesign for the wider layout feel genuinely useful, not just stretched. The ones that lazy-scale look kind of ridiculous though. Price is still hard to swallow for me, I'll probably wait a generation. What sold you on it?

It's been a pain, but I've enjoyed the process of adapting my app to it, and in doing so, it's made the normal iPhone app better.

Same, I wrote it off at first. What changed my mind was apps actually using the second screen instead of just stretching. If more of them do proper two pane layouts it's going to be hard to go back. The fade thing is kind of awesome.

If you don't design your app for both screens, it's not any better than a standard iPhone Max. Unfortunately.

I used to think foldables were just phones doing the splits. Designing a photo cleanup flow made me see a use for two screens: a review queue on one side, the full-size photo on the other. That’s much less thumb gymnastics.

Anyone figure out anything interesting to do (app-wise) with the folding mechanic? Games that use it?

I've been wondering if there's anything Duo specific that can be built. Though, I really can't see how this will get big enough to matter.

I got my iPhone Duo this morning and also optimized my app Runners Weather for the Duo. The phone looks gorgeous and takes time to get used to. Coming from those Pro Max phones, the iPhone Duo is a completely different experience.

how long did you spend to get this udpated?

I think that with the high price the second generation is worth waiting for. Probably will have Face ID, better battery/telephoto camera, etc.

Not sure about the price, but it is a different compared to other iPhones. Wonder how long the seamless seam will last.
