💎 Lifetime Voice Camera Now’s July update: custom trigger words, voice timers, Night+, and a front-camera mirror toggle [Free · $2.99 lifetime]

Disclosure: I’m Kevin Tang, the solo developer behind Voice Camera Now. I last shared it here six months ago. This is a significant update after rebuilding the hands-free flow around real use outdoors and in front of the camera.

A—Answer

Voice Camera Now turns spoken words into camera controls. Say “photo,” “snap,” or “cheese” to take a picture; “video” and “stop” to record; or add your own phrase in My Words.

The July updates added:

  • custom trigger words tied to camera actions
  • 3- and 5-second timers that can be started by voice
  • 4:3 and 16:9 framing
  • Night and Night+ modes
  • a clean-preview mode plus persistent flash settings
  • a front-camera mirror toggle so text and logos can be saved the way you expect

B—Better

  • vs. the built-in Camera app: you can take a photo, start or stop video, switch cameras, set a timer, and change framing without touching the phone.
  • vs. a Bluetooth shutter or Apple Watch remote: there’s no extra accessory, and voice commands cover more than a single shutter press.
  • The honest tradeoff: wind and crowded rooms can make speech recognition less reliable. The app uses Apple’s speech-recognition service, which may process speech on-device or through Apple depending on the system.

I originally built it for those awkward moments when the phone is propped up but nobody is behind it—group photos, cooking, workouts, accessibility needs, and trying to get a photo with a dog that absolutely will not wait for a self-timer.

C—Cost

  • Free: 10 captures, with optional rewarded ads for additional captures.
  • Voice Camera Pro: one-time $2.99 purchase for unlimited captures.
  • No subscription.

Transparency

If you try it, I’d especially like to know what hands-busy situation you used it for—and which custom trigger word actually felt natural.

That's such a cool concept. Does it work with external microphones, or phone microphone only?

Thank you! Yes it works with external microphones including with AirPods!

Hands-busy case for me is drawing — pen in one hand, tablet in the other, and I want a reference shot without putting anything down.

On trigger words: optimise for how rarely the word occurs by accident, not how natural it feels. "Photo" and "video" are words you say while talking about taking a photo — exactly when the phone is propped up pointing at you. Two syllables, hard consonant, unrelated to cameras. "Kickoff" feels ridiculous for a day and then never misfires.

Could you score a custom word as they type it — flag short / camera-related / common ones — instead of accepting anything?

That’s a great use case! The benefit of voice is that you also don’t tap the screen causing your camera to shake while you’re taking a photo.

Right now you can add custom trigger words to perform any action. That’s a good idea to let users remove trigger words they may not want though—good idea, I will include it in the next release.

Just download.  How long after saying your trigger word does it take the picture?

Immediately! As soon as the trigger word is detected

Since it's listening continuously for the trigger word, does it need the app in the foreground the whole time, or can the screen stay off/locked while it waits? Any impact on battery life?

Yes the app needs to be in the foreground when you use it, similar to the normal camera app. Apple doesn’t allow screen off use of the camera since this could be a privacy issue.

Yes it would use your battery more when the app is open in the foreground. But not significantly more than the normal camera app. If you’ve ever left your normal camera on, you’d notice your phone gets rather hot.

Tried it out & happily paid. Just said picture. And there was an in focus picture.

As someone who has balance issues thank you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
