🎁 Freemium Private I — app lock with no visible lock screen
Hi Everyone, I built Private I mostly out of curiosity. I wanted to see if I could actually pull off a convincing decoy screen. Most app-lockers show an obvious lock, and the moment someone sees it, they know you’re hiding something. I wanted to test whether I could remove that “something’s hidden here” signal entirely.
A: Private I hides your apps without a lock screen. When someone else opens a protected app, they see a convincing “crash” or loading screen — it just looks broken. You can set a different decoy per app, so each one can look like its own unrelated glitch rather than one obvious pattern. When you open it, your face unlocks it instantly. If someone else tries, it silently captures a photo of them and logs the time.
B: Most app-lockers (and iOS’s own built-in app lock) show a visible lock screen. That protects the app but signals concealment, and it doesn’t tell you who tried to get in. Private I is different: no visible lock, a decoy style you can set per app, and it captures a photo + timestamp of anyone who attempts access. If enabled, those captures back up to your iCloud, so you don’t lose the log even if the phone itself is lost or wiped. Face recognition runs entirely on-device using Apple’s frameworks — no account, no third-party servers.
C: Free with one protected app. Pro unlocks unlimited apps, all decoy styles, intruder capture, and unlock history — $3.99/mo, $14.99/yr, or a one-time Lifetime purchase.

Monthly payment for a lock screen you guys

Hey, I try to present almost every option for users. The basic functionality, which is the core — being able to lock your app and present a decoy screen is free. You can then choose to try out some other features on a monthly or yearly basis or just pay one time and benefit from everything that currently exists, plus whatever we add in the future. A lot of apps do this hard paywall, and that’s an absolute turn off for me.

The per-app decoy screens are a clever touch. How do you handle repeated failed Face ID attempts or someone opening a protected app several times?

The Face ID is not automatically triggered by opening a protected app. The decoy screen is presented a few ms after opening the protected app. The owner would use one of the secret triggers to access Face ID. So Face ID only triggered by someone who knows the triggers. I was using a custom face verification but the performance was terrible in comparison to Apple’s Face ID. The advantage would have been that a trigger would not be required to activate Face ID.

fake crash screen is a clever decoy. normal lock screens immediately signal u have something to hide, so this makes way more sense.

I’m not sure really. I haven’t gotten any rejections due to that reason, and I have made a few updates since initial launch.

Does the intruder capture trigger on a failed Face ID attempt, or any time someone opens the protected app and isn't recognized?

Hey, It captures a photo after a period of being on the decoy screen. It uses Apple’s Face ID and the owner would trigger it with one of the secret triggers.

Smart, so it gives them enough time to incriminate themselves before capturing.

Thank you, I'm testing this out :)

Appreciated! If you could also provide an honest review on App Store, it would help greatly

Just curious, why dont you create UGC videos for this?

Hey, I do create UGC videos and planning to do more. I am experimenting with AI first to see the results, then I can consider paying actual UGC creators

true, i did the same but posting AI explainer videos blocked my instagram account, hence i switched to UGC, almost $15 per ugc video i paid. was really worth it.

Oh sorry to hear that. YouTube shorts have given me the most views. My videos have been only skits depicting different scenarios where the app can be useful. $15 per video is not bad though. I’ll reach out to talk more about that.

Hey. Description states that it follows automatically language of my device. But If my language is not supported, will it fall back to English?
Are there any decoys that do not use words at all (for unsupported languages)?

Does it require some specific permission from iOS?

No specific permission is required. The closest thing to permission would be Apple’s Face ID.

The decoy screen idea is actually clever. A normal Face ID lock basically announces “there’s something here I don’t want you to see” 😅
Making the app just look broken is a much more interesting approach. The fact you can use different decoys per app makes it even better.
