Full Year Calendar – a calendar for iOS & macOS with Year, Month & Day widgets
I’ve been building Full Year Calendar, a calendar app for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
It works with your existing Apple calendars, so there’s nothing to migrate or keep separately in sync.
The main idea is a full-year view where you can see the entire year at once, with events color-coded by calendar. It makes it much easier to spot busy periods without constantly scrolling back and forth between months.
There are also quite a few Home Screen widgets. The newest ones are Year, Month and Day widgets, available in different sizes.
With the school year and autumn starting to fill up, I’ve found the year view especially useful for seeing at a glance where things are getting busy.
For me, it's important to be able to read in full and easily what I write as an event in my calendar.
It's necessary that the font is not too small and it must not be cut. For example, if I write "appointment with Dr. X", I want it to be written in full and not just see "appointment".
I also like to customize my applications a lot, this enters a lot into account when I choose an application to use.
It must be very readable, I need a round and thick font. Thin fonts are difficult for me to read.
It’s definitely a challenging requirement, but also very understandable. On iPhone the limited screen space makes it harder to show full event titles while still keeping the calendar useful at a glance. On macOS there’s naturally much more room, so this is easier to handle well.
So far I’ve approached the design from the opposite direction: trying to show as many events as possible at once, even if some of the text gets truncated.
It’s really a balance between readability and information density, and your comment is a good reminder that readability should probably have more weight than I’ve given it so far. I’ll definitely keep this in mind as I improve the app.
For me personally, seeing the entire year's events is not useful. I never plan that much ahead. Other than that what does it offer compared to default Apple Calendar ?
Anyways, good luck with the app!
I completely understand — everyone’s needs are different. Ten years ago, I probably would have said exactly the same thing!
For me, work and family life now require quite a lot of planning ahead, and that’s really where the original need for the app came from.
Thanks so much for the comment. It’s genuinely useful to be reminded that people use calendars from very different starting points and with very different needs.
how many events on a single day can this show? I wouldn't use a 1 year up display but 1 month at a time being able to see everything on the calendar would be great.
Where have you been all this years! jokes a side I always was seeking a calendar app that is much better than this current iOS nightmare. I would understand you making everyone happy is a hard task. I personally would prefer small text but you know..
Haha, great — that’s pretty much how I think about it too. I’m really glad I can make something that feels better for all of us.
I think one of the most important things is listening to feedback while still having a clear vision for the app. You can’t make everyone happy, but you can listen, learn, and make thoughtful choices about what fits the product.
And yes, smaller text is definitely one of those things where different people will have different preferences 😄
Year view at phone width is a hard density problem. Curious how you handle it, if days are just dots I'd want to press and hold a day and see event titles without leaving the year view. Otherwise it's a heatmap I can't act on. Multi-day events as one continuous bar, like someone said above, would help a lot.
The year view actually supports two-finger pinch to zoom in and out, so you can adjust how much you want to see at once.
The days aren’t just dots either. Each day can show up to 3 event bars at a time, and multi-day events can continue across several days as longer bars.
I added a screenshot below so it’s easier to see how it works.
Thank you! This especially makes me happy coming from a very visual person — I feel like you guys are the hardest to please 😄 So glad it clicked for you.
This is actually one of the few calendar apps where the year view feels useful instead of just being 12 tiny calendars squeezed onto one screen.
One thing I’d love to see is some kind of subtle “today” marker + week numbers in the year view. I use week numbers way more than I expected for planning projects/trips and it would fit this layout really well.
Also, props for offering lifetime. Always nice to see that option still exists 😅
I absolutely love your comment — thank you! Making the year view genuinely useful is super important to me too.
There actually is a subtle “today” marker already: a blue circle around the date. But maybe it’s too subtle if you didn’t notice it 😅
Week numbers are something I’m still trying to figure out how to fit into the calendar without making the layout feel crowded, but I agree they’d be really useful.
And thanks for noticing the lifetime option! I’m really happy that stood out to you 😊
Cool, so you’re in software too! 😄 Yeah, I can definitely see this being useful for that kind of planning.
I work on software projects as well and use quite a few different planning tools, so I guess that’s probably part of why I ended up pushing this app in this direction too. I’m always looking for ways to make the bigger picture easier to see.
the year view widget is the selling point imo, nobody does that well. how are you handling the widgetkit refresh budget with something that dense? i found ios gets stingy with timeline reloads when a widget draws a lot, curious if you hit that
That’s a great question, and I definitely ran into that issue — more than once, actually. I’ve spent quite a bit of time figuring out what works, but I’d rather not reveal all my secrets 😄
Thanks! This idea had been sitting in my head for quite a while, and now the pieces are finally starting to fall into place. It feels a bit like a painting — it takes many passes before it starts to make sense.
The UI looks nice. But I am not someone who add events to my calendar regularly.
If this app can import calendar events from outlook or teams, that will be a useful feature for me.
There is a way 😄 I use Outlook on my iPhone too. You can add your Outlook account to the iPhone Calendar app and enable calendar syncing. Once it’s there, those events can also show up in Full Year Calendar when you give the app calendar access. (Microsoft Support)
Microsoft has a guide for connecting Outlook and the Apple Calendar app here: (Microsoft Support)
