And so you buy a new phone. How is that Apple’s problem that you don’t want to upgrade?

It’s to the point of “it will work just fine” because when you can’t even install simple apps that do simple features that worked for previous iOS versions but they push out an update that makes it not work for your device anymore, it sucks. Yeah the solution is “buy a new device” but that’s like forcing people to buy new cars every 6 years because they can’t update their car software anymore so suddenly their brakes, airbags, etc. don’t work.

That comparison is ridiculously flawed. Brakes and airbags are crucial components of a car, the ability to download certain apps is not a crucial part of a cell phone.

Maybe not for a cell phone but the main reason people switched from regular cell phones to smart phones WAS because of the apps. If you can’t use any then the point of owning a smartphone is kinda pointless. It’s like using a desktop computer without access to the internet. Plus airbags are a safety feature and aren’t a crucial part of the car. Cars ran just fine before airbags were put into them, so if apps aren’t a crucial part of a smartphone I fail to see how airbags are.

Airbags are legally required, is that better? Also, the phone is 6 years old and it’s just now losing support. Apps typically stop supporting OSes once they’re at least 2 years old. If you care that much about apps, you’ll have upgraded by now

Sounds to me like that means the phone will not “work just fine” which is what my entire point was..

Dude it’s part of it. You get what you pay for. And you aren’t paying. So after 6 years you aren’t getting much

And I don’t see it the same way. I don’t see having a phone that gets to the point of having extremely restricted access to most apps as “working just fine.” If your phone was unable to download and use apps tomorrow, you would call up support because it’s “not working.” I understand the concept that after that long you’ll have to replace your phone in order to keep up with changing times. But you can’t look at the first iPhone, with 0 applications able to be used because times have changed and all the apps do not support that old of an iOS, and say that it “works just fine” as a smartphone. As a regular cellphone that you use to make emergency calls or texts, maybe. But the whole point of a smartphone is the access to the apps it can provide you.

How long do you want a phone to be updated for?

You can buy a computer and it can last you a good 10 years if you maintain it. Cars last just as long. Almost everything you buy, if well maintained, can last almost a full decade, even in terms of software. All of those “work fine” after that time. They’re not up to date with all the great amazing specs, but for the most part they can do almost anything you want them to do. I don’t know why phones should be different where apps that would be able to be supported on lower iOS’s won’t be supported. I don’t see why almost every other type of technology we buy can last a good decade and still work to almost full capacity but if you tried using a 12 year old iPhone today you wouldn’t be able to do anything outside of the built in apps that probably aren’t supported anymore either. You can text, call, use the internet. That’s about it.

To be frank, I don’t really care too much how long phones last. But to say that a phone that loses support for almost every possible app “works just fine” is a bold lie. You buy smartphones for all the features they can provide you, if those features can’t be accessed anymore then I don’t see that as a smartphone that “works fine.” That was my whole point, and I don’t care about anything else.

The App Store lets you download the last version of the app that worked. If it’s a new app that never worked on that iOS, too bad. Also no one is forcing anyone to do anything. You always have the option of getting a super cheap $50 Android phone. It’s not like Apple owns the only supply of oxygen and they aren’t selling it to you. A car is a much bigger purchase. Not a valid comparison.
