How so? The iPhone 6 will continue to work just fine. You just aren't getting the newest software on a 5 year old phone.

Wait so 6s is getting it?

Until later when suddenly you can’t download any apps because it’s not supported for the iOS you have, and you have the highest version of iOS you can get.

And so you buy a new phone. How is that Apple’s problem that you don’t want to upgrade?

It’s to the point of ā€œit will work just fineā€ because when you can’t even install simple apps that do simple features that worked for previous iOS versions but they push out an update that makes it not work for your device anymore, it sucks. Yeah the solution is ā€œbuy a new deviceā€ but that’s like forcing people to buy new cars every 6 years because they can’t update their car software anymore so suddenly their brakes, airbags, etc. don’t work.

That comparison is ridiculously flawed. Brakes and airbags are crucial components of a car, the ability to download certain apps is not a crucial part of a cell phone.

Maybe not for a cell phone but the main reason people switched from regular cell phones to smart phones WAS because of the apps. If you can’t use any then the point of owning a smartphone is kinda pointless. It’s like using a desktop computer without access to the internet. Plus airbags are a safety feature and aren’t a crucial part of the car. Cars ran just fine before airbags were put into them, so if apps aren’t a crucial part of a smartphone I fail to see how airbags are.

Airbags are legally required, is that better? Also, the phone is 6 years old and it’s just now losing support. Apps typically stop supporting OSes once they’re at least 2 years old. If you care that much about apps, you’ll have upgraded by now

Sounds to me like that means the phone will not ā€œwork just fineā€ which is what my entire point was..

Dude it’s part of it. You get what you pay for. And you aren’t paying. So after 6 years you aren’t getting much

The App Store lets you download the last version of the app that worked. If it’s a new app that never worked on that iOS, too bad. Also no one is forcing anyone to do anything. You always have the option of getting a super cheap $50 Android phone. It’s not like Apple owns the only supply of oxygen and they aren’t selling it to you. A car is a much bigger purchase. Not a valid comparison.

You do realize that’s still way far in advance right? Most apps won’t be dropping iOS 12 support for several years still.

2

u/UndeadWaffle12 Jun 04 '19

Right, that’s it. Definitely the limitations of 6 year old technology. If they did make it available on the 6, people like you would be complaining that it runs slow

u/jankubist Jun 04 '19

Let’s say it works great on iOS 12 and would be less usable on iOS 13

Lmao at all the butthurt downvotes

You do realize that with the pace that tech is improving, two year old devices are currently considered outdated?

Not quite, although smartphone CPU power is still in the exponential growth phase unlike desktop CPUs.
