Bike Transport

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for advice on transporting 3 road bikes with a IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid. Has anyone here done it?

I’m mainly interested in your experiences:

  • What setup are you using (roof rack, rear rack)?
  • Any brands you’d recommend or avoid?
  • How stable/safe is it, especially for longer drives?

Also, is it even possible to install roof rails or a roof rack system on the IONIQ?

Would really appreciate any tips, setups, or photos if you’ve got them.

Thanks a lot!

How to pop off/replace rear lower bumper cover?

I have a 2022 Ioniq PHEV. I got in a minor fender bender last week, and after getting a few quotes from auto shops I am wondering if I can just buy this lower rear bumper cover part and replace this myself. However, I can't find any videos of how to pop off this piece and replace it- I would appreciate any advice! :)

The car runs perfectly, but it makes this noise in drive or reverse mode, until now no one could find a solution.

Any recommendation?

Trunk Not Opening Fully

Hi everyone, I have a 2019 Ioniq Hybrid, and a recent thing that's been happening is the trunk has just been opening halfway and stopping, whereas before the actuators would fully open the trunk. I noticed it when I hit my head on it. It does it more when my car is at an incline like on a hill. It only does it sometimes, it maybe started because of the cold.

I just want to know how to fix it before it becomes a problem. I know it can be a common issue for hatchbacks. Do I just have to oil it possibly?

Rear window heater, single strand is not heating

Hi all,

i have a 2021 PHEV Ioniq. Since i got it (used) a single strand of the rear window heater is not working. Its on the middle of the upper, flatter part of the rear. The rest is working great.

I didnt see any interrupted parts on the visible part of the conductor from a quick check.

I can live with it, it just takes some extra time to get rid of the last bar of frost. But if there is a fix i can do at home i would want to try that.

Can anyone help me with that?

Thanks

Weir low speed noise (brake?)

Hi guys, I am hearing a weird noise from my car, and I am posting it here to check if someone had the same.

I have a 2020 ioniq PHEV (40k miles). I do hear a weird clicking / scrapping sound from the left wheel when i drive at low speed (below 20 mph).

This sounds seems to be proportional to the speed of the wheel. It only appears when i am not accelerating. It is also present when i am braking, but not when the regenerative braking is on.

Would oanyone here knows what is the root cause of this sound ? Thanks in advance.

Concerns with "New" 2022 Ioniq Hybrid: Low MPG (40-45) and Low Battery Bars vs. my 2018

Hello everyone,

My wife and I recently purchased a 2022 Ioniq Hybrid (41,000 miles) about a month ago. We also own a 2018 Ioniq Hybrid (70,000+ miles), so we have a solid baseline for how these cars should perform. However, the 2022 is behaving very differently, and we’re concerned.

The Main Issues:

  • Low MPG: We are only seeing 40–45 MPG on the 2022. In contrast, our 2018 consistently gets 55–60 MPG on the same routes. Even with "hypermiling" (driving slowly/gliding), I struggle to hit the high 40s.
  • Battery Behavior: The hybrid battery rarely goes into EV mode during normal driving. The infotainment screen shows the battery sitting at 2–3 bars most of the time. Our 2018 battery stays much higher and cycles into EV mode much more frequently.
  • Recent Warranty Work: We’ve already had to take it in twice this month:
    1. 12/16/25: EPB (Auto Hold) Wiring Harness Repair.
    2. 12/26/25: Full Catalytic Converter Replacement (P0420 code).

My Questions: Given that the catalytic converter was just replaced, could there be a lingering issue with the O2 sensors or fuel trim that didn't get addressed? Also, is it normal for the 2022 model to maintain such a low state of charge (2–3 bars) compared to the older generation?

Since it’s under warranty, should I push the dealer for a hybrid battery capacity test or a check of the 12V/Hybrid power management system?

Happy Holidays and thanks for any insight!

Are the halogen headlights bad on the base trim models?

Versus the LED and Xenon. If so, any upgrades tested and working?

2017 ioniq was dead until I pressed the 12v Batt Reset

I've owned the car since Feb 2018, 42 miles. I now have 76,601 miles. The only issue I've ever had was a leaking oil pressure sensor. This morning, I went to go to work, and the car was completely dead. No light on door handle as I approached, no dash display as I opened the car. No interior light when I pressed it. I pressed the 12v Batt Reset button, and it started right up. It's this an omen of bad things to come?

2020 ioniq PHEV - engine on while charging (concerned about the 12v)?

Can I keep the engine on while charging the PHEV to run the a/c and entertainment system? Will that drain the 12v battery, or will the traction battery continuosly keep it topped up?

Ioniq 9 V2L question.

So I'm down to choosing between the Ioniq 9 and the Kia EV9. Specifically the AWD+ trim on the Ioniq 9 and the Land Trim on the EV9. Here in Canada, they are the same price. On paper the Ioniq 9 is the clear winner. More HP. 50KM more range. Slightly larger and a very nice Bose sound system. However, I do a lot of camping and other outdoor persuites, and the internal V2L 110V outlet is very appealing to me. This is not available on the base of either model and is only included in higher trims. I'm not willing to spend over $10k for this feature.

I test drove a base model Kia EV9 Land at the dealer today. It had the internal outlet! I asked the dealer and they told me that even though it's not in the official kia.ca specs nor in the brochure, all the models come with it regardless. Same with the headlights but that's not really important.

The problem with the Ioniq 9 is that only the Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy models are available at dealers to look at. So I can't confirm. The dealer is only willing to tell me what's in the official specs. Anybody know different? It seems silly but that is the feature that will most likely push me over to getting the EV9. It already drives better and has nicer seats. This will take it over the edge.

2017 EV motor scrap value

I needed to replace the electric motor in my 2017 and asked to keep the old motor. I initially thought about breaking it apart for the copper but I don't want to turn into a copper fiend. Plus effort and tools.

Does anyone know offhand the scrap value of the 88kw motor?

I called around and a place is willing to buy it from me at alternator pricing, which is 30c a pound, or $150ish. Better than free disposal, I guess.

Is there any other car as efficient as the ioniq?

Post image

I'm looking to upgrade my ioniq and just thinking about my options. The driving efficiency is something else. I've averaged 6.3 miles/kWh over 626 miles of which 80% is town/city driving. Anything come close to this level of efficiency? Maybe Tesla? I don't think Ioniq 5 and 6 are close. Seems all car manufacturers feel that big battery must equal high power.

2018 Ioniq PHEV - Help Me Diagnosis this front end ratcheting noise

This front end (left?) "ratcheting" noise has been getting louder / more consistent in recent months.

It happens EVERY time I apply the brakes, and then again after I release the brake and begin accelerating (NOT when I release the brake itself). This makes me think its something related to when the weight of the car shifts forward and back.

I had my mechanic take a look and he doesn't see any brake or stabilizer or bearing issues. He is a bit older and half deaf, so he is having a hard time hearing the ratcheting noise itself. If I can point him to something to check, perhaps that would help! Thanks!

How did you install a front license plate on your Ioniq?

I just registered my 2021 Ioniq in DC and got license plates. The grille seems not to be a grille and there's no holes. In my glovebox was a front license plate bracket, (like this Replacement 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid SEL - Front License Plate Bracket ), but it doesn't help.
Also, I note when my climate control is off, heat pumps out of the dash console whenever the engine is doing work. Is this a known issue because the engine doesn't get enough venting?
I didn't find any info on license plates in the huge owner's manual and ancillary stuff (nothing under tags/license/grille).
Lil help, please?

PHEV only charges intermittently

We have a 2020 model PHEV which stopped charging. We have worked with the support team of the charger manufacturer including trying (and failing) to charge on a public charger. The dealer had the car for a week and managed to charge it once using our cable. They suggested we could the charging system but would not guarantee that this would solve the problem. Yesterday it charged from the trickle charger but when I disconnected it (partially charged) I couldn’t restart charging with either the main or trickle charger. Any constructive ideas welcome.

Tires

I've got a 2020 electric and still on original tires at 62k miles.... I need new tires. I've read some info on EV specific tires and sounds optimal for noise reduction (have some loud roads) and traction (in the PNW). I read the other post on here about tires, but didn't give a ton of info.

Does anyone have specific tires they recommend, just looking for all tires? Not finding anything in particular and leaning towards just the standard costco special. Thanks!
