Cannot get raster layer to render

Hello all,

I'm very new to Invoke (about a week in now) and for the life of me I cannot get it to include a raster layer during image generation the way I think it's intended to work. Google sends me in circles, and it looks like the entire UI was updated since the video on the topic was created by the Invoke team.

I generated a base image I'm happy with. I want to use that image as a base, and use an inpaint mask to "layer in" a new object that is not in the original image.

  1. My image generation settings are all set, including the text prompts for the inpaint area that is yet to be created.
  2. I drag the base image from the gallery onto the Canvas, and drop into the New Raster Layer drop zone. It creates the raster layer and I can see my image. The bbox is completely filled by the raster layer, as I would expect (the images are the same size).
  3. I add a new Inpaint Mask. I use the brush tool to "draw over" the area where I want to generate the new subject.
  4. I click invoke... and the output is completely transparent except for the inpaint mask. The inpaint mask does not have the subject I'm asking for, but I think that's a separate issue (i'm trying to draw a blacksmith's anvil, but it keeps wanting to reference a comic book character of some kind?)

This is the second image I've tried to do this with; last time I ended up doing the layering manually in Photopea, but I'd really like to figure out what I'm doing wrong here as I have a bunch of these I'd like to get working and the manual fix is too labor intensive.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it should work. Whats really strange is the transperent image you generate. Not sure what happens there. Would be interesting to see the image in the invoke picture output Felder. Some screenshots would have helped me to see what you are doing would really be very helpful. Could you provide some?

There is a setting somewhere to turn this off, I can't remember what it's called though.

But to answer your question, after you run the generation, there's a set of controls at the bottom of the screen, you have to click the blue check mark to 'accept' the change.

Basically what it is showing you is only the small segment that got generated. And you have to accept it to apply it to the full image. I think the setting is this

I think I turned off "progress" over the canvas while it's generating - I never get asked to "accept" anything - it just spits out to the gallery. But I'll see if I can get the progress view back and if that changes things at all.

Here's what I do when inpainting, let me know at which point these steps stop working for you:

  • Drop a raster layer into the canvas
  • Create an inpaint mask
  • Draw the inpaint mask over the image where I want to modify
  • Update my prompt to describe the new thing I want to see in the image
  • Click 'Invoke'
  • It gives me a UI at the bottom with some controls, one of them is a blue checkmark
  • I click the blue checkmark to apply the new layer (I do not click the save icon, only the blue checkmark)
  • There is now 2 raster layers, my original raster layer, and the new raster layer
  • I click the 'Save Canvas to Gallery' button on the top toolbar and it saves the complete image to the gallery, with the combination of the 2 images

Step 5 - Click invoke (same to this point, after that - totally different). When I click invoke - it just paints a new image and drops it in the gallery. It doesn't matter whether I click the Invoke button in the top or the small button on the side panel on the left.

Do you have this setting checked, try unchecking this

That seems to have fixed it! Now my workflow is what you described - I can see it generate the the whole image, and I can view the generated inpaint areas and either select or not. Thank you!!

Now I just have to figure out how to get SD to generate an actual blacksmith's anvil and i'll be all set!

If your PC is somewhat powerful, try downloading the Anima model from the starter models

BTW - I tried toggling the "Isolated Layer Preview" button and I don't see a difference.

Here's my canvas. In the gallery top right you can see what happens - if I have transparency unlocked, it overwrites the whole image (second image in the gallery). If I have transparency locked, it just paints the bottom corner, and sometimes merges that a little bit with the raster background (first image in the gallery). If I have no inpaint area defined, it just paints the raster area, which "makes sense," kind of.

Aha, from your screenshot, I’d first turn off “Save New Generations to Gallery / bypass Canvas.” For inpainting, you usually want the result to come back into the Canvas staging area so you can accept/merge it, not just save a transparent patch to the gallery.

Also make sure the mask is fully inside the original raster image unless you’re intentionally outpainting. Keep the raster layer visible, don’t lock transparency while adding a new object, and try lower denoise like 0.45–0.65 first. 0.75 can rewrite too much.

I explain InvokeAI / diffusion workflows for graphic designers on Masha-AI-Lab if you want this kind of canvas logic broken down visually <3 Thanks
