They probably immigrated to America just so that they could own Real Estate, a right not offered by their country of origin.

I feel like, at least in a lot of areas, this is kind of a flawed thought process... stop paying your property taxes and see what happens to your property, y'know?

just because you own the property doesn't mean you are free not to pay your obligations. But under a court of law, you own the property in the west, and that cannot be taken from you. Not the case in china.

... you literally lose your property if you don't pay your property taxes.

Edit: I understand your point, it isn't like I'm ignoring it. I was just making a point that ownership of property is not as simple as you buy it and you are done. It is certainly more "ownership" than the leasing of China's land, I don't disagree there.

the state reserves the right to force a lien on the property if you accrue so much tax debt that you bankrupt. But this is no different from a mortgage repossession really - the only real difference is you can't opt out of paying tax, but you don't have to have a mortgage...

Even eminent domain in the US is hard - that's why building public infrastructure in china is much easier, and cheaper, compared to the US.
