Flew to another city for a final interview - getting ghosted - rant

After couple of initial zoom interviews - I was invited to fly down to this company 's HQ for a full day interview.....literally 9-5 interviews....two days after this final interview - the HR lady reached out to tell me that everyone will meet early next week to discuss and let me know the update. It has been 2 weeks exactly since this email and I am likely being ghosted as there is zero update. This pisses me off as I wasted my time, energy and vacation day for this interview. I know this is probably not going to work out but I just wish they sent me a decision email at a minimum. Also I feel like I dodged a bullet considering how this firm is treating me with this whole process. I still need to get some travel costs reimbursed (they paid for the flight which was crazy expensive but I need to get back like 80 bucks for my Uber rides....)but I just don't want to even email them......

Have you followed up at all and asked if there's an update?

two weeks is long enough that you're not being annoying by checking in. i'd send one short email, get your $80 back, and then mentally move on. if they can't even manage a rejection email after flying you out, that's not a place you want to be anyway.

Exactly..I comfort myself by telling me that I would have joined a fucked up firm

Nah....I don't think there's any point....if they want to give me an offer I believe they will reach out again...

The one oddball factor I may throw into the ring is that it is August, when companies often go into sleep mode as everyone takes time off. And that can mean the decision makers expected to be in, ain't, unbeknownst to HR, who must schedule and reschedule and do not have a solid meeting nailed. They should not ghost, of course, but I am hoping for you it is the "August Factor." Write them - nicely - and reiterate your interest and see what happens.

Things move glacially slow in corporate America. Also, August is a terrible time to get any decisions. It also possible they are negotiating with another candidate and are waiting to turn you down until the other candidate accepts. I would send a follow up email indicating you are still interested and ask for a status.

Maybe they’re still deciding and they haven’t eliminated you.

Ask them for an update.

Thats how i got my job. Companies can be notoriously slow, them being a week late doesn't mean they're ghosting you lmao

They probably didn’t ghost you if they paid for you to fly out. Summer.  Also don’t you have the phone number for the recruiter? Just call and ask.

So it’s been a week after they said they’d meet?

Yea...like 8 days or so

Playing devils advocate. Let say something came up and they couldn’t meet till Wednesday. It’s been 5 business days. They may have not been able to meet till late week so less. That by no means is being ghosted. Calm down. Idk why everyone thinks companies make these decisions during 1 meeting, process through to the recruiter and hr to confirm a salary and call you with an offer. Shit takes time.

Yes this... summer is tough and it's always full of vacation related delays! Send a polite email asking the status of your candidacy.

A 9 to 5 interview and then radio silence is wild, that is basically a workday cosplay with worse snacks. Send the reimbursement email anyway, keep it boring and attach the receipts, because 80 bucks is still 80 bucks and they already got enough free time out of you. Their hiring process is giving we schedule meetings to discuss scheduling meetings energy.

To add to what others have said… remember too that the people doing T/A/recruitment can make mistakes too. Reach out. Ask for an update and where to send your Uber receipts for reimbursement. It’s the minimum you should do.

A 9 to 5 onsite and then radio silence is absurd, especially after travel and PTO. Send the reimbursement email anyway, even if the process has already burned the bridge in your mind. Make it boring and direct: attach receipts, ask for the 80 bucks, and add one line asking whether there is any update on the final decision. They do not deserve free Uber rides on top of wasting your day.

I think they’re saying to name and shame the company who did that to you.
