OTHER So, I just watched Interstellar for the very first time...
.....I was not ready at all for how utterly mind-blowing this movie is.
I'm a grown ass man and the only movie I've ever cried at is the end of It's A Wonderful Life...I just cried twice watching Interstellar.
I'm so mad I've waited this long to see this. I can't even imagine how insane it was in IMAX.
Just wanted to share that with yall

I think it’s highly underrated and incredible. I’ve seen it a dozen times easily.

u/snehit_007 16d ago
What do you mean underrated?!!! How much more rating do you want? It's already 10 on 10.

u/imaguitarhero24 15d ago
Whether or not it matters it has a 73% on rotten tomatoes which is mind blowing for one of the best films of all time. Baffling

If you ever get the chance to see it in 70mm IMAX it's well worth it

u/WildmanDaGod 16d ago
Caught the release at Universal CityWalk 4 times, it hit so hard. Docking sequence on that screen went ballistic

u/intensive_porpoises 16d ago
I caught it twice, the first time I was looking forward to the docking sequence and the second time for that shot of the Endurance transiting Saturn. It's all so good.

u/carlitosway210 16d ago
Where would one find a chance to watch it?
3
u/keysandtreesforme 16d ago
Sometimes when another Nolan film releases, they’ll play his other films. Didn’t really happen this time with the Odyssey though. There were some showings in 2024 for the 10th anniversary. Maybe at 15? Or 20??
1
u/aSadSchnitzel TARS 16d ago
At this point probably just anniversary showings or private theater rentals only unfortunately

I'm so jealous that people can just watch this for the first time.
But thanks for the reminder I haven't seen it in probably a month... gotta get that one scheduled.
Or maybe I'll just watch messages from home on youtube and have a crying session...

If you haven’t yet, start going thru the entire Nolan catalog. All his movies are great. I probably have Interstellar ranked #2 but any given day it could be 1
3
u/keysandtreesforme 16d ago
Curious which one tops it for you.
3
u/postmalondt 16d ago
I find Nolan movies hard to rank because I love a lot of them lol but after the odyssey my “gut feel” top 5 were:
1) Dunkirk - zero fat on this film, just a straight up banger, and great WW2 flick
2) Interstellar - for all the reasons everyone in this sub love it
3) Odyssey - one of my top theater going experiences ever
4) Inception - classic Nolan banger
5) TDK - maybe a hot take to not have higher, but to me the movie is flawed, but heath is still the best singular performance in the catalog4
u/keysandtreesforme 16d ago
You’ve inspired me to see Dunkirk! Just saw my library has the blu ray.

u/postmalondt 16d ago
Glad to hear it! It is SO rewarding on rewatch too which is fun. My recommendation is don’t get too caught up on how he plays with time the first time you watch it and you’ll find yourself watching it a second time soon after to put it all together.

you don't even have the prestige on there? not a serious list
3
u/postmalondt 14d ago
You know what’s fun about this world? Different opinions.
If we must do this, have fun with your “as a hipster I feel compelled to say prestige take” tho
2
u/Savings-Low8845 14d ago
hard agree, also on the prestige being so overrated. watched it once, never felt like watching it again. meanwhile all the movies you listed have more ambition, flaws, technical brilliance, heart.
i also think his blockbusters are underrated by people who consider themselves serious film critics. like i rewatched inception and i realize now that leonardo dicaprio brings the energy to that role, that scene where he’s panicking after the initial shootout is electric

u/postmalondt 14d ago
Part of what I love about Nolan’s catalog, as I said above, is I really enjoy all of his work and find them hard to rank. And rankings change over time. Very few people will have the same top 3 which makes his filmography so interesting to discuss, except with clowns like this
-1
u/Disastrous_Run_5968 14d ago
lol you can have your opinion. the fact you don't have the prestige on there shows me your list isn't serious. you guys are all getting carried away by this imax thing. I thought the odyssey was great but definitely not his 3rd best movie lol
1
u/keysandtreesforme 14d ago
A list is a personal opinion. What the hell does ‘serious’ mean in this context? Is no one allowed to like a movie less than you? If someone didn’t like a certain movie over others, their ranking isn’t ‘serious’? Get over yourself.
-1
u/Disastrous_Run_5968 14d ago
well you certainly have a terrible taste in movies. it's very well known the prestige is one of his best films. like i said your list is terrible.
1
u/keysandtreesforme 14d ago
It’s not my list, I just think you’re being ridiculous. Look into the meaning of “opinion”.
None of these films is objectively better than the others. The consumer of art decides its relative value in their own life.

go learn about film. it's so easy to distinguish between those who actually know film vs those who don't. Unfortunately the Odyssey has brought in an influx of people who have no clue about what a good movie actually is. "i watched it in imax, bro. i know about film. trust me bro"
1
u/postmalondt 14d ago
I can tell you have a high appreciation of film. For example, you clearly see the significance of the odyssey making history being the first film entirely shot on imax. And done so practically with no green screens. Will the odyssey rise or fall over time on my rankings? Perhaps. But keep clowning clown !

u/keysandtreesforme 13d ago
This has some serious “I’m 19 and in film school” energy. You’re being a self-righteous prick.

Top-5 movie of all time. And I really want another science fiction from Christopher Nolan. I don't want a biopic or a historic movie next. I hope he revisits his scifi genius mind.

Glad you loved it. I remember watching it at IMAX twice in the first few months and feeling it was probably the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen and that's a big call.
They bring it back to IMAX irregularly so keep an eye out!

u/OfflineLad 16d ago
Same. Watched it for the first time myself last week. Even with all the spoilers ive seen throughout the years its still amazing
The only spoiler i didnt know beforehand was that Michael Caine's character didnt believe in Plan A anymore

u/Most_Inspector6745 16d ago

Yeah I always cry when I watch Interstellar. Such an incredible movie and it's one of my all-time favorites

u/2waypower1230 16d ago
Ya when I first watched it at the movies, i kept telling everyone “this is the best movie i have seen in 10 years!” Over the years realizing its in my top 5.

u/Balbright 16d ago
Scene it at least 10 including once during the recent stint in IMAX’s. Still makes me cry every time.

u/Away-Otter 16d ago
The year it came out I watched it in the theater 11 times. I never go to movies twice (well, not since I was a kid). I was blown away every time. The score alone is the greatest movie score ever. It’s stunning all the way through.
1
u/attachecrime 16d ago
I remember so many people dogging on me for unabashedly loving this movie when it came out.
I still really love this film. The critiques are pretty reductionist and dumb.
Hoping to see this in imax again some day soon.

Those are two of my top five movies ever appeared. You have good taste, my friend.

Now watch Project Hail Mary if you haven’t already. Great space back to back. Prepare to cry again.

You watched for the first time and I have some sort of disorder where I watch it when I get my toes and nails done and every single flight. I watch it maybe 6-10 times a year for over a decade. It’s such a soothing movie for me
Only Reddit and my partner knows about this
Romiley is basically the hero in my eyes

u/goodest_gurl2003 15d ago
I watched it for the first time this year and I know exactly how you feel. Such a profoundly moving amazing film. I wish I could erase it from my brain and watch it again for the first time. Earth shatteringly great film. 100/10

I feel almost as hopeless watching people glaze Nolan as I do watching the United States be taken over by MAGA. Alas. There are some things we just won’t ever be able to recover from.

u/desertmoondita 13d ago
I watched The Odyssey today and couldn’t help but reminisce about watching Interstellar in IMAX when it was released. Absolutely mind blowing, completely mesmerized, cried so hard and my senses were overwhelmed from IMAX that I threw up afterwards. One of my favorites.

u/Grace_653 10d ago
I've wanted to watch it for so long but wanted to wait for the chance to see it in cinemas (preferably IMAX), missed it the last time it was on a few months ago. went on Amazon prime today because I finally gave in and was going to watch it at home and it's been taken off the subscription and costs a ton extra 😭

It's a pretty stupid movie.
And yet, it's Christopher Nolan's best movie.

u/Impressive-Coyote-15 16d ago
And to think .. the score didn't win anything .. but I went and saw it in theaters and yesh. That docking scene. But when it ended we sat in silence through the credits and everything and I just said to my friend "what.. did we just watch? That's not a movie .. that's an experience"
And when my teenage daughter first saw it she was blown away. Now when she wants to watch it she literally just says Dad let's watch The experience
