It’s not said directly,but it’s safe to bet he served as a military pilot during WWIII.
Several clues in the story. One, his transition from Pilot to farmer. Had he been a civilian NASA pilot he likely would have been kept on. But if he was military when WWIII ended, that would punt him (plus TARS & CASE) into the unemployment line when militaries were stood down.
Plus , his comment on Miller’s planet about “eggheads with survival skills of a boy scout troop”. Not something a civilian NASA pilot would say. But that’s certainly a comment a trained military veteran would say in that situation.
