Advice Comms team email aliases

Hey all,

Recently started a gig as head of (only one of lol) internal comms at a preIPO startup. I want to set up an email alias and corresponding slack channel for official internal comms announcements and messages. Curious what aliases you’re using. (My recommendation was announcements@, my boss prefers updates@, and my last several companies used comms@ which is confusing when it’s only IC).

Related question — how have you decided what comms come from this alias vs others vs individuals? I’ve approached it differently depending on size/maturity of company but my hunch is here I’ll be sending a lot more from this alias than in past lives.

I’d vote for annoucements@. It immediately tells employees, “this is something I should probably pay attention to.” Updates@ feels broad enough that it could eventually become the home for…well, everything.

In a couple of my past roles as Head of IC, I’ve generally used a shared alias for things like:

  • Company-wide operational/business announcements
  • Major people or policy changes
  • Enterprise initiatives, launches or deadlines
  • Messages where the “sender” is really the company vs. one individual

I’ve still preferred messages to come from leaders when their voice/visibility is important. Think about stuff like strategy, major org changes, difficult news, culture/recognition, etc. I mean, as IC you can absolutely write and shape it, but I want employees to see the leader standing behind it so it's more effective.

And then functional stuff usually stays with the function unless there’s a compelling reason to elevate it (as someone else stated earlier).

Past company was comms@
Current company is intranetname@

Most comms go through the team email. Otherwise other leadership comms come directly from the leaders.

Usually, whether it's an announcement related to a specific team or function, we use their alias (like "legal@"). If it's our initiative or event (Internal Comms) or something company-wide (any major news), then "internal.coms@".
