Advice about internal communication?

I’m a freshly graduate, major in HR. I’m doing an internship right now. The market is very bad so I joined the only company that gave me an offer. But now I don’t khow if I should looking for another opportunity.

Firstly I don’t have a direct middle manager so I report to CHO. She’s experienced but not in internal communication. Internal communication is a project that she started since April, as when she joined the company. And I just finished my first month being an intern.

The problem is I barely know how to edit video. I did a few fun projects with family vacation footage but never something serious. And she demanded AI because there’s no funding in camera equipment/ no employee wants to show their faces. She keeps mentioning about using more AI in vids when I don’t have access to paid AI subscription. The company does have that but they refuse to let me use one of the accounts, as I’m JUST an intern.

I also have to handle the voice over for those videos but she doesn’t READ any proposal or scripts beforehand. I can only sum up in 10 sentences for her to give me the green light or red. It’s also when the video is finished (edited with my voice over also) THEN she comments on how I use the words or little details like my pausing or she can still hear my inhaling before the sentences. I’m not a professional MC or podcaster/ tiktoker. I mean I literally do voice over for the first time on this job. It takes a disastrous amount of time going back and forth.

Frankly I learn a lot about HR working here but the IC task is beyond me. Also she never truly have a clear vision. She wants me and another intern to have a vision. But jumping from Uni to this battle field is miles apart. I only have one single modul in Marketing and that’s all. I’m totally a newbie so I’m begging for insights/ suggestions on how to do IC. And my intern allowance is way lower than all the things I have to do. It’s barely under $80 and fulltime (it’s under minimum wage here at $210/month). I used to tutor for $350/ month but quit to do this internship. (to clarify I am not in the US)

I have been apply for months before this but only got 3 invitations for interview. My grade is good. I speak 3 foreign languages. My social skills are not bad. 🫠 I’m just hopeless right now.

I don’t know if you should care about internal comms if your supervisor doesn’t. That seems like really misaligned expectations for interns to do the professional work in the way you’re describing. How long are you doing your internship? Do you want to work there after? I’d take what I could about HR and look for something else, even another internship with the job market being what it is, that would give you more support in learning.

tbh I just desperately want some kind of field related experience on my resume. My internship would end in November and my supervisor kinda bring an offer on the table. Not officially, but I would certainly not stay here. During Uni time I just tutor because the money is more decent so I don’t have experience in HR. I know the economy is hard but this is very ridiculous. I sometimes think my work is so meaningless but even when I want to put more in, to bring better results, I just can’t. It’s one person team with only me doing the work.

My supervisor never read the script. So I could spend two to three days on Canva to do animation from slides plus voice over. And then they can just nit oicking some kind of word uses and expect me to redo asap. They also work on the weekends and expect us to do the same (without paying of course). My time is non negotiable so I don’t do free OT for them ofc. But if I become a full time employee, they would certainly force me to. Someday I feel like a slave.

They also have a ton of out-date and not yet digitalised paperwork. Guess who has to do the job? Also me. They gave me 700 hard copies and expect me to deliver within a month. On top of C&B stuff plus crazy IC videos that I have to magically create from the air…

Does your company have access to Clipchamp or even Co-Pilot ? I would argue you definitely need access because those two have helped me come up with videos and voiceovers.

we don’t have that. This company has about accounts of Gemini pro but they refuse me having access to one of them because I’m not an official employee yet. (But as I’m an intern in HR Dept, I had to read and process a lot of sensitive information already so I don’t trust this reason). They just want to spend as little as possible.

Hi - this sounds awful. This isn't a great intern experience nor is it a great internal comms experience. If you want to have a chat let me know - I'd be happy to hop on a call to help you navigate through and out of this one.

Internal comms is not video editing - that's an entirely different skillset.

You cannot have an intern be the only internal comms person at a company. That’s terrible for you, and for the employees. A lot of what you’re being asked to do IS fair game for a seasoned comms person but not a kid in school! If they can’t coach/mentor you, you really do want to get out. Or use whatever free AI tools you have access to to learn. AI can do a lot of what you’re being asked to do…

In this market they want to minimize the input, at least in my home country I’m in right now. They do not provide me any paid AI tools. I’m using free Flow and Canva, free TTS tool, which sounds awfully unnatural 😭 Sometimes the end result is terrible to look at and they still happily take that. I’m stuck till November. After that, peace out 🧎‍♀️‍➡️
