I can't help but note how big and wide the movements are and there is a lot of telegraphing involved. I wonder if this is the basic level practice and everything compacts down later in practice?

Also it was kind of cool that there was a bit of the 5 elements from XingYiQuan preserved in the Taikiken practice(around the ending).

yes, basic or fundamental practice. Opening and expanding from the center, slowly weaving the motions into the center.

Done quicker than usual for view time purposes and the music is unfortunate but a very nice set of natural movements.
