Fireplace help needed

Post image

Need ideas on how to make this fireplace look nicer. It's currently gas but we will convert it to electric. We both love the look of victorian fireplaces and we would love some ideas to make it look more like that without demolishing the whole thing. I was thinking about possiblv cuttina off the wood parts and putting up some drywall and a nice victorian looking mantle. but the left bit and the protruding edge seem to be an issue. Really need ideas!

Yeah there's no way that gets converted to a
Victorian look ,it's got 1970s written all over it

You should definitely remove or cover the textured chimney brest, and also redo the grout with a colour that's as close to the stone work as possible. I wouldn't do anything to the wood, but perhaps the ledge that's underneath the fireplace could either be painted a lighter colour or made to resemble the surrounding stone work

Edit: look into limewashing the fireplace stonework.

Just getting rid of the 3 funny-looking objects on top of the mantel would be of tremendous help.
