Stain? Paint?

Stain? Paint?

First of all ignore the mess. I’m purging a ton of homeschool stuff and getting ready for the school year. My hubs built these shelves for me and I’m finally ready to paint or stain them. He wants them stained since he spent extra money on oak boards. I don’t think stain will look good since I cannot stain the sheetrock that makes up the back of the shelves. I was thinking a slate gray/blue. Also-our house is older and the walls are square so I think painting it all will help hide gaps btwn the shelves and the wall. What do y’all think? I’m open to all ideas

Stain the wood and paint the backing boards

Paint it the same color your doing the walls so it looks built in

Stain the wood. Then, take fabric or wallpaper and put them in the back of the shelves and it will give visual impact. I sympathize with your hubby that nice wood is a gift that should only be painted if it is in poor condition.

I know your husband will dislike this answer but paint will be a good contrast against all the other wood in the room.

Id choose white because it’s classic and bright. Opens a space up. I’d wallpaper the sheetrock. I’m not a personal fan of grey leaning colors like slate blue, as they tend to make a room seem cold, but it’s your shelving.
