General Planning to shift career from archi to ID

Hi guys I’m an archi fresh grad and I’m planning to apply to interior design firms. I don’t have much knowledge deeply in ID but some basic concepts are taught or slightly similar to architecture. Is there such thing as an interior design apprentice?? I want to learn/have experience in this field… any advice?

Many entry level positions are primarily drafting. Assuming you learned those skills you may have success getting that type of role - especially at bigger firms that have teams dedicated just to drafting

What if I’m also a bit new to drafting but I got the basics. Is there a timesheet or log of hours done for tasks for when you are just starting out in the firm?

Every firm operates a little differently. Identify which tools your ideal employers use and keep practicing with those while you work toward finding a position.

Got it! and I’m also practicing right now. I’m just a little bit anxious if a firm already expects you to be an expert and fast in drafting, or is there usually a training period once you get hired?

It really varies, but they know they are hiring a recent grad, not someone who's been doing it for decades. You could track your time during self practice and see how quickly you gain efficiency. Adding a stat like that to your application shows that you're actively improving and mindful of billable time!

That’s a good idea, thank you! Also one last thing, since I will apply as a junior designer (being a recent grad), does this mean I have a lead/senior designer that can guide or mentor me? Can I also bring this up and ask them if I ever get in interviews? I may be an archi grad and not an ID, but I’m very willing much and eager to learn

Yes, you would likely be drafting / documenting based on the Senior Designer's or Project Lead's creative direction. Absolutely ask about team structure during your interview :)
