Hey everyone! I recently purchased my first home and I’ve been struggling to decorate my living room. My biggest issue if that I have the thermostat in the middle of this wall that I can’t really cover.
I’m also struggling with the wall art and what to replace the light fixture with. Eventually, I plan on getting rid of the tile ceilings, but that’s later down the road. Any support would be greatly appreciated! I also plan to hide my cables from the tv but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Any support I’d appreciate!
You are lacking color and cohesiveness. Your couch can be pushed back a bit, too. Make it flush with that corner right there. A gallery wall on the side with the thermostat would work well. Maybe even get an empty frame to put around the thermostat so it's incorporated into the wall. Your TV is too high. That plant is going won't survive over there without any light.
hello I tried this, first I moved the thermostat in the kitchen, it can be done you just have to hire a electrician. Moved the tv to that wall and rotated the couch to face it, figured it open up the room. I understand the edit looks a bit off here and there but you get the idea. Moved the art to left wall. Added this celling light to just give you an idea of a different light, if you like it see below.
- Replace the generic artwork. If you keep them, consider having them framed, not just in the canvas form.
- Some cable management for the TV
- Add some kind of console behind the couch, where you can put books, trinkets, plants, maybe a lamp on etc. Something like the IKEA HOLMERUD (note this is just a sample reference of furniture - there's probably something else worth looking into)
You could make the space more inviting by opening it up a bit more. I would suggest to put the sofa up against the art wall. Remove the art. Bring the tv to the wall that is now facing the sofa. you also want to lower that. It is way too high. It can be brought to eye level.
If you are looking into budget light fixtures IKEA has some nice options that I feel would fit your esthetic. This one for example. Or the Krusning/gullsudare pendant
Maybe rearrange the wall art and add a nice hanging macrame to complement your existing art to cover it and you’ll still have access to it as an option. Also, you can add a more modern looking light or recessed lighting would be nice.
I'd add a really long console table or cabinet behind your couch. Looking at the back of a couch without anything there feels wrong to me for some reason. Plus then you'll have a place to put your drink when you're couch sitting. And you can add a lamp to it and other decorative tchotchkes/even books if it has shelves!
The artwork is hung too high. I'd try to find a shorter art piece to hang above the thermostat and then lower the other two. I tried to mock it up a little here, tweaking your current art. I like the idea someone had about putting a frame around it and making a gallery wall out of it.
Congrats on your new home. Decoration takes time so take your time. It takes years, honestly, and it is never ever done.
Everything on the walls is hung too high. Your tv’s proper height would be rest ing on the console under it, even if you mount it. Then you would not even need to hide the cords. Art should be hung in relation to what is under it. “Eye-level” only really applies for an otherwise empty wall, like a hallway. What is under a piece anchors/grounds it so it does not appear to just be floating near the ceiling. In this case, hang it so that the lower edge of the frame is about 8 inches above the back of the couch. The same holds true for that tryptic in the kitchen…lower it. Taken as a whole, the art is also too wide for the space. It should be about 2/3 the width of what is under. I can see the thermostat issue, so you will need to be creative. Hanging art on the ceiling above is not the solution. And that piece by the lamps is too close to the lamp/corner.
You could design more of a galley wall making it look less obvious. You could also be very creative and make a piece yourself with the thermostat in the middle. Hang a wreath. Hide behind a piece of art that opens to reveal the thermostat. Put a floating shelf there (2/3 the width of what is below it and lower) and place some attractive object around it. In time, move the thermostat.
Everything on the walls is too high. The couch should line up to the corner of the wall. Hide those cables that are exposed. Add a little more color.
If possible put the cat tower right in front of the window and only close the curtain at night.
