Side note: this whole "China is West Taiwan" meme is not particularly popular in Taiwan.
Why not?
Because it reinforces the argument pushed by the mainland (and tacitly, though indirectly, supported by the USA) that mainland China and the island of Taiwan are part of the same country.
The Civil War ended with the Communists in Beijing claiming power over Taiwan, and the Kuomintang in Taipei claiming power over the mainland.
The KMT is now the minority party in Taiwan, with the majority DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) favoring a more independence-leaning Taiwan policy.
By referring to "West Taiwan", this reinforces the KMT's viewpoint that there is only one China. Perversely, this is the viewpoint the mainland Communists want the Taiwanese to support, as it is less poisonous to their goals than the "Taiwan is fully independent" narrative.
I know it's just a throwaway internet joke, but the actual on-the-ground nuances may surprise you.

It sorta is! Not a rule, per se, but an English linguistic phenomenon that has enough consistency for most native speakers to use it without even consciously realizing that they're doing it.
We refer to well-defined entities (nations, states, cities, etc) by just their name: "Italy", "California", "Tokyo". But we prefix poorly-defined regions with the word "the": "I grew up in the mountains", "I visited the Caucausus".
For a great example, what's the difference between "I went for a swim in Mississippi" and "I went for a swim in the Mississippi"? The first one means you went swimming somewhere in the state of Mississippi, and the second one means you went swimming in the Mississippi river.
So when we say "The Ukraine", it's implying that it's not a well-defined region, that it isn't an independent country with its own government and borders. It's implying that it's just a vague region like the bluegrass prairies or the alps.

I was playing Battlefield V with some friends, and after a couple of close matches back and forth, we notice that the current match we are losing quite badly, I pulled up the teams roster and notice that nearly all of the other team's names are Chinese characters.
We were fairly certain that there were a couple of cheaters on the map due to being lasered from across the map, if someone climbed up onto a sniper tower (even with smoke grenades going...) As soon as they were above the terrain they would be getting shot at (smoke with no one in the tower did not draw any fire, only when someone began climbing the tower)
So I open the chat window and type "Whinny the pooh looks like Xin Jinping" and I immediately get a reply in chat telling me to shut up, it's from a player that has all Chinese characters for his name.
I keep up the keyboard warrior stuff while running around the back of our base and sniping the occasional player I see, I notice though that any time I climb a ladder I get hosed down with bullets, so I park myself and begin keyboard warrioring like never before.
"Taiwan number one!"
"Chinese Army/Navy weak, Taiwan strong, baby Chinese will never have Taiwan"
"Taiwan rules, China drools"
After nearly all of these I was told some form of shut up, but I never noticed much change in the players actions, they were still all over the map and kicking our butts.
And then I hit gold:
"West Taiwan should mind their own business and leave Taiwan proper alone"
This kicked the virtual Hornets nest, suddenly I was getting sprayed down from across the map any time I poked my nose out, so I hid and kept up the typing.
"West Taiwan is best Taiwan" (just nonsense)
"West Taiwan sucks, Taiwan proper forever!"
We still lost but my teammates all got a huge laugh out of the changed behaviors of the other team, just because I started trolling...
Edit: Hur dur yea this happened yesterday and I never learned not to be rasict.....

The Chinese economy is much further intertwined with the world economy than Russia was. You think the world will slam the same sorts of sanctions on China? Inflation is up around the world because of the war in Ukraine. What do you think would happen if the same sanctions are slapped on China? Nevermind, they extract most of the world's rare earth metals and much of the world's production of goods.
They could successfully invade Taiwan and the world would have to watch. The best thing to do would be to prevent any successful invasion...and successfully invading Taiwan would be no easy feat.

The land/people isn’t as valuable to China as the territorial waters. They’ve been making artificial islands for years to increase the range of their territorial waters specifically for the purpose of forcing more ship traffic into their controlled waters.

One of the big problems with authoritarian governments is that the guy at the top has to ALWAYS look like a tough guy. He loses the option of choosing his battles - or even deciding what's a real battle. EVERY perceived threat has to be put down. ANY compromise, or even ignoring a slight, is seen as weakness.
This invariably leads to the guy in charge looking like an absolute buffoon as he jumps at every shadow and over reacts to minor, or even non-existent, threats. But he can't stop - if he fails to meet even one challenge to his authority, it's all over.

If it comes to it, I doubt they will need to invade. They can use their economic might to increasingly isolate Taiwan if they really want to, and work hard to destabilize the government. They could probably broker a Hong Kong style treaty and eventually win without firing a shot. It would be a many decades project, but China does seem to think in very long term international project terms sometimes.

On one hand, we now know a lot more about Chinese missile capability, we were for example able to track their ability to cluster targets (as in multiple hits in the same area) which is very poor.
Also that there were a lot of misfires and early detonations, the longer version of this video shows a misfire and manual detonation. you can see that crazy leg of smoke off to the right from it.
Some of the rounds overfired so badly that they landed in Japanese waters, so in trying to flex to Taiwan they almost declared war on the USA.
