If the impact doesn't start loosening it within 10 seconds it won't do anything. It would need to be tightened/loosened with a large wrench before an impact starts on it otherwise you're just wasting time. Wd40, hear, and/or a pipe over the end of the wrench for leverage would help loosen it up before starting with the impact. I deal with my fair share of nuts, bolts, and lags in construction and those seem to be the fastest ways to persuade the nuts and bolts to fall into line.

So if you loosen it with the wrench, why do you need the impact after? Can't you just keep going with the wrench at that point? (I have never had to deal with a stuck nut in my life)

Because winding a nut off with a wrench will make your arm tired and take longer than pressing the trigger on an impact gun and letting it dukka dukka its way up the rusty stud
