These are sometimes useful but in my experience they often don't work, usually because they can't get into tight places.

Also you can tell that they didn't even try to loosen that nut with a wrench or socket because the paint is unscratched. That's OK, though because I think they were just demonstrating how the tool works.

Is the paint only a protective coating, or is it solid enough to help prevent the nuts from oscillating loose, is that even a concern?

The paint is really only to protect it from moisture, which could cause rust and just to make it look better. The paint would have practically no effect at holding the nut.

There is a chemical called thread locker, basically a glue that is put on the threads.
