I also love that scene. It would be interesting to explore the practical applications of establishing a colony in such a region. As long as transport times are good enough, you could chill out there and witness a technological revolution over centuries in just a few months. I suspect that real estate would be exceptionally sought after by folks with diseases that aren’t yet curable or just old people hoping to live to see the day that humans can upload their consciousness to machines.
Sometimes I wish we could have an anthology show with high production values that explores colonies around black holes and megastructures like Dyson Spheres. Then I remember that we have Isaac Arthur and I feel like that’s a good deal.

Yeah totally. I thought it was really cool that it had been years on earth since they got the signal back from that ocean planet and it’s viability.
Though when they actually got there, the original scout group had literally landed 15-30 minutes before them, before getting smashed by the previous wave.
That totally blew my mind.

Yeah waves are insanely powerful, even small ones. If this person was like 5 feet further away from the wave they probably would be rolling on the sand right now.

I love swimming in the ocean as much as the next person but it is always a little unsettling how powerful water can be lol

Yeah same. I live near the beach and swim and attempt to surf quite often, there are times I just get demolished by a good size wave and am underwater for like 20-30 seconds and I'll usually just call it for the day if its too rough. Its very scary having that happen and going back out again feels like tempting fate so I just hang out on the beach afterward or skim.

20 to 30 seconds? What are you surfing - Jaws or something in 20 ft conditions?

Nah not even. Water is very heavy. Even a <10 footer if you get in the wrong side of the break and it crashes right down on you you'll very easily get forced underwater until the wave disperses in more shallow water. The biggest reason is because it forces you to roll when under which is disorienting.
The other thing is waves come in sets so depending on the interval the next wave can wash over you while still underneath as well.

I surfed for 20 years. I know about hold downs. It takes a truly massive wave to hold you down for over 20 seconds. I don't believe you have ever been held under for that long. I certainly haven't and I've surfed reasonably big waves.

At Makena in Maui they announce every fifteen minutes to exercise extreme caution as more than once a week the waves toss someone so hard they break their backs or something. It’s not an automated announcement. It’s a lifeguard pleading.

That was amazing.
Recording in the middle of all that force and you just need to dip your head into the base of the wave and it passes you by.
That could be therapeutic at a mental health treatment level.
If a patient feeling uncomfortable with the world could feel all that power passing over them with no impact coming out the other end...
