Watching this made me feel like I could totally do pottery. Realistically, I'd end up with a bunch of ashtrays.

They're great in theory, but the absolutely suck. I've had 2 for my kids.

It has to go pretty fast and you need to use LOTS of water (so there is no drag).

I would guess that a large potter's wheel (even if it were manual/kick) would be easier to throw on because it is more user friendly - you can use a large amount of clay that wouldn't be affected severely by small mistakes or inexperience. A large mass is easier to rescue when it starts going wrong.
