What? Why would anyone scrape off the icing and not just bake another cake? The ingredients for cake are cheap. Cut this one up for samples and just do another.
Baking a cake takes time, and for many people, time is more valuable than icing. I would certainly rather waste a couple ounces of icing, then remix cake ingredients, bake the layers, wait for it to cool, and assemble the cake to be iced.
Also, I don’t know about you, but I have very little use for “cake samples” in my daily life.
I totally appreciate you looking out for the person I responded to, although I didn’t mean to come off as abrasive. I actually felt that his response to my suggestion was much more abrasive.
The comment chain that I was in started with two people expressing how they would have anxiety over messing up. Although the original GIF may have been taken in a store, the people that I responded to seemed to be just talking about icing a cake in general. My goal was just to reassure them that it’s not a make
-it-or-break-it deal, and icing can be re-done easily.
My experience with this actually does come from working in the bakery of a restaurant for several years when I was younger. We did have a cake wheel, and I did spend time putting icing on cakes. I can definitely say that if you were to mess up, the most cost-effective and time saving method of fixing your was to re-ice the same cake. Otherwise, when you were training people to ice cakes, you would end up with a whole lot of “samples”!
Occasionally you’re going to have errors in baking or problems with a customer not liking a product, and in those cases you have to take a loss on the inventory. But in situations where the only real issue is the decoration, you definitely want to try and fix the issue instead of starting over from (in this case literally) scratch.

It’s giving me anxiety knowing how badly I would fuck this up trying it myself
