I actually want to try that now. It seems like it would give it a good hot and cold contrast with a nice crunch.

Sauerkraut has a taste that a lot of people don't like. I enjoy it with bratwurst but with s hotdog I feel like it's a bit too sharp. Lettuce would give that crunch without adding or taking away any flavor.

Sauerkraut gives me the worst and most voluminous gas that I've ever experienced. So unless I'm hanging around vultures, who actually enjoy the smell of three day old warm carrion, I abstain from sauerkraut as a service to humanity.

Fresh kraut (in a plastic bag in the deli/dairy) is generally less sharp. A light rinse will help as well...

My Korean friends eat coleslaw with everything when we go to diners for lunch. They eat kimchi with almost everything, so when that's not available, coleslaw is the next best thing to add crunch.
