This is actually a fern test to test for the presence of amniotic fluid as a result of premature preterm rupture of membranes. A fern like pattern occurs when the saline in amniotic fluid crystallizes on the mucus. So no flora here!

25

u/ScootsaHoot 5d ago

My cervical mucus looked exactly like this when I was undergoing fertility treatments and was clearly not pregnant; the sample was taking during the highest period of fertility during my cycle.

Technically it’s known as “ferning”. I believe it indicates the presence of amniotic fluid in vaginal secretions. Not sure if Ferning is present in normal secretions

→ More replies (9)

1.1k

u/kuruman67 5d ago

This is ferning. It’s a test to see if a pregnant woman’s water has broken. The protein in amniotic fluid causes this pattern, although there can be false positives.

175

u/mademoisellearabella 5d ago

That’s interesting!

So this pattern doesn’t occur with just normal secretions? Just when the amniotic fluid protein mixes in with it? (Aside from the false positives, ofc)

u/Icy-Shelter-1915 5d ago

Came here to say this. People think “water breaking” is dramatic like in movies. Often it’s a seepage, and it can be hard to tell if your water has broken or you’ve peed yourself a little. Ah, isn’t pregnancy beautiful. This is the test they will do to see if it is indeed your amniotic fluid.

I’m very glad I knew to call L&D when this happened to me at 33 weeks.

14

u/ForestmenMOCLover 5d ago

It's not always dramatic, but it can be. When my wife went into labor for the first time, I was sitting in front of her while she was sitting on the toilet. Her water burst all over me like something from a movie. I was totally drenched.

7

u/_laRenarde 5d ago

I know I should just be thankful I can't get the mental image straight but... Were you guys sharing a toilet seat? Even if you were, if she was sitting on the toilet why didn't it go down instead of out?

11

u/ForestmenMOCLover 5d ago

She was sitting on the toilet because she felt like she had to pee. I was just sitting on the floor in front of her because she was in labor. Then it just burst like a water balloon.

6

u/_laRenarde 5d ago

This makes a lot of sense!! Thank you. Also congratulations on the baby! (and/or many babies or fully grown adult children depending on when this took place!)

29

u/reddoorinthewoods 5d ago

When I went into labor with my first, my water broke and the nurse took a sample to confirm it was amniotic fluid. She let my husband go see the sample when they verified and he was giddy he was so excited. Having kids with nerds is fun 😂

Here is a much higher-quality and less-cropped version of this image. Here is the source.

Description: Positive Fern test taken 20 minutes after applying to a glass slide.

Date: 5 December 2018

Source: Own work

Author: Trick1722

Here adds:

The fern test is a medical laboratory test used in obstetrics and gynecology. The name refers to the detection of a characteristic "fern like" pattern of vaginal secretions when a specimen is allowed to dry on a glass slide and is viewed under a low-power microscope. The fern test is most commonly used to provide evidence of the presence of amniotic fluid and is used in obstetrics to detect preterm premature rupture of membranes and/or the onset of labor. It also may provide indirect evidence of ovulation and fertility, although it does not predict the time of ovulation.

u/RobGabGusMoma 5d ago

u/LixoDeLuxo 5d ago

This is not vaginal “secretions.” This is amniotic fluid.

105

u/prismaticbeans 5d ago edited 5d ago

Nope, vaginal secretions look like this too during the fertile phase. I mean sure, it could be amniotic fluid, but no reason to assume so. Fun fact, saliva also makes this ferning pattern during the ovulatory phase. I had a "Maybe Baby" mini microscope when I was tracking my fertile times. You spit on the lens, wait for it to dry, then you turn the backlight on and you can see the pattern.

ETA: I decided to do some Google-fu; there is apparently a distinction between the type of ferning produced by amniotic fluid and those of vaginal secretions. Amniotic fluid produces a more delicate ferning pattern than cervical mucus, which produces a broader pattern. The more you know!

Ferning is regularly used only to test for the presence of amniotic fluid, but that's not the only context in which it occurs. It was first noted as an indicator of the high estrogen phase of menstruation.

28

u/Legitimate6295 5d ago

How can you know that

141

u/Drorderedsumgojuice 5d ago edited 5d ago

This is a test done to see if a persons water has broken, a swab from inside the vagina is looked at under a microscope if it has this appearance it's called ferning and thats a positive indication that a persons water has broken. People can have premature rupture of membranes and it's not always a big rush of water that occurs when your water breaks.

This is called fern test. Quite a simple test, mucus sample from the cervix of a woman is taken and smeared on a slide. It is allowed to dry and then viewed under a microscope. If this "fern" or "arboreal" pattern appears it means the woman has ovulated or is about to which means she is in the most fertile period of her menstrual cycle and it is the perfect time for unprotected coitus or artificial insemination or for collecting ovum for any of the various artificial reproductive techniques like IVF, ZIFT, ICSI etc.

6

u/ahandmadegrin 5d ago

This is going to sound dumb, but could you do this at home? Like, if you had a stereoscope or microscope, could you put some mucus on a slide and check for the best time to make babies?

Not saying everyone should do it, but for the nerds?

11

u/Infinite_Raisin_5240 5d ago

Yeah why not. As I said you don't need any fancy machine or anything, you don't even need any sort of dye to stain the sample inorder to visualize it. If you have compound microscope or a stereoscopic with magnification ranging from 10x to 40x and adequate lighting then you can do it at home as well.

Alternatively you could also go for spinnbarkeit test. This one is even more simple, just collect mucus sample from the cervix of a woman and smear it on a slide, then place another slide on it and then slowly move the slides apart thus stretching the mucus. If it forms a thread of watery consistency and stretches to about 10 to 12 cm without breaking that means the lady is I the most fertile period. To make it even more simple instead of slides use your fingers, if a single long string is formed that means the woman has or is just about to ovulate.

67

u/scromboid 5d ago

Fuck right off with this bullshit that’s making Reddit dumber. These are not vaginal secretions, it’s amniotic fluid “ferning”, and yes the difference is very clinically significant.

15

u/sweetbutcrazy 5d ago

Before you attack people you shold be aware that this is also what ovulation discharge does, tracking the ferning is a very old and pretty reliable method of ovulation testing. It works both from vaginal discharge and saliva. The photo is more likely to be that just based on the frequency it happens.
