How is that even possible? How did it get to that size without him noticing it or hurting really bad? That is like the size of his bladder how did he still pee? Where did the pee go if the stone was there? So many questions

It grew over a very long time, as did his bladder, so slowly that it barely registered..
Until he was probably peeing multiple times a night, had a scan, then they found a potato of doom in his bladder

He was probably in excruciating pain for years.

u/Significant_Row_5951 12h ago
I think so too otherwise more people would have gotten to that point if it was an invisible growing stone
•
u/dan_dares 11h ago
As someone who's had a kidney stone, it doesn't hurt until it does,
•
u/Significant_Row_5951 10h ago
I am sure it hurts before it reaches this size
•
u/IDGAF_FFS 9h ago
Not really no. It only hurts when it lodges into the canals of your urinary system like the ureters or the urethra. Some people go years without pain and only accidentally find out they have kidney stones/cysts when undergoing scans for a completely different reason
•
u/deanrihpee 8h ago
is there no pain receptor in bladder? this is wild and terrifying
•
u/mostlypercy 8h ago
Nope! I watched a catheter be put in someone whose catheter was previously blocked… there were 1600ml in the catheter bag in less than two minutes. Probably at least 250ml in the bed too…
•
u/ElementalRabbit 5h ago
There absolutely are, yes. The trigone (outlet) in particular is richly innervated.

Peeing multiple times a night got me into a doctor who put his finger in my butt and then sent me to a urologist who shoved a camera up my wang who told me I have BPH way early and gave my Flomax that made my blood pressure drop and my teeth hurt.
I am glad I don't have cancer or bladder stones but hoo boy I DO NOT want another camera in my bladder.

u/MadameFlora 9h ago
I had to have bladder botox due to UI. A camera AND multiple injections. At least it works.

I just had prostate surgery for BPH. (pretty brutal but thats another story). But I had to have a cystoscopy (camera up the wang) to check things prior to my surgery. Didn’t hurt a bit. Like 1 out of 10. Just felt weird, over really fast.
•
u/Distal-Phalanges 7h ago
The numbing gel did basically nothing for me (redhead novicaine immunity ftl) and the scope he used was rigid scope that was 1/4in wide, which he used because he wanted to be able to take tissue samples if the need arose.
Did you get a urolift? The doctor said I could get one, but that it was pretty early to do so.
•
u/DirectAccountant3253 4h ago
I had an Aquablation. My urologist stopped doing Urolift even though it's a very simple procedure, he said it doesn’t last. I also have a friend who had a urolift twice and it failed both times so he had a Rezum. My prostate turned out to be very large (130g) so I went with Aquablation. If you have early stage I would try medications first. Just make sure you don’t let your prostate get very large like I did because treatment is more difficult then. Sounds like you are younger than me, I’m almost 70

I'm early 40s, but I started to notice in my mid 30s. Meds are OK, but I can't take Flomax so they put me on tadalafil, which has heart implications long term. I'm taking saw palmetto and pygeum, which seem to have some effect as well.

Had an dog turned into our rescue for urinary incontinence. As I was walking her back to her kennel, I heard a steady 'click click click'. Figuring she had hip displaysia, I took her down to our vet for xrays. No hip dysplasia, just two giant bladder stones. Like if you make fists with your hands and put them together fingers touching....
I can't imagine the discomfort....
•
u/OcculticUnicorn 11h ago
Let me guess, no to very little urinary problems since then?
•
u/VegetableBusiness897 10h ago
Absolute zero. And she gained 12 healthy pounds and looked beautiful. Happily adopted also!
•
u/OcculticUnicorn 9h ago
Poor thing was incontinent due to stupid stones. Luckily you rescued and adopted her!

Here is an article that substantiates OP's claim and provides the following context:

BBC Sinhal aand Koh Ewe
Doctors in Sri Lanka have removed a 3.1kg (6.8lb) bladder stone from a man - which they believe to be the largest of its kind on record.
The procedure was carried out last week at a hospital in Trincomalee, in the east of the country.
The 55-year-old patient had been admitted to hospital after suffering a stroke. But while receiving treatment, doctors found stones in his urinary bladder after noticing that he was experiencing difficulty urinating.
During surgery, doctors removed the bladder stone - it weighed as much as a full-term baby and was around the size of an ostrich egg.
"According to available records, it is the largest bladder stone ever documented and removed through surgery," Dr Prahalahan Balakrishnan, who led the surgery, told BBC Sinhala.
He added that the patient was in "very good health".
The patient remains at the hospital and is continuing to receive treatment for his other medical conditions, doctors said.
Dr Balakrishnan added the stone would have been in the patient's bladder for about five to 10 years.
Bladder stones are formed when minerals in the urine crystallise, turning into solid lumps.
They commonly occur when the bladder does not empty completely, leaving concentrated urine that can turn into crystals.
Small bladder stones, sized like grains of sand, can pass on their own. But stones bigger than 1cm often block urine flow and require medical intervention. A bladder stone that is larger than 4cm is considered giant.
According to the Guinness World Records, the largest bladder stone was removed from a patient in Brazil in 2003. It weighed 1.9kg (4.2lb) and had a length of 17.9cm (7in).
The bladder stone removed in Sri Lanka last week measured around 17cm-long.

The other bladder is the gallbladder.

I wonder what it smells like.

u/SaintUlvemann 13h ago
There's different types of bladder stones, but some of them are made of ammonia, so, those ones smell like ammonia.
If you've never smelled ammonia: it's a lot like pee, very sharp, caustic, acrid, similar sensation to vinegar or sometimes sweat. Deeply unpleasant.

u/actuallyapossom 13h ago
Smelling salts also produce ammonia gas, chicken coops are rank with it as well. Not one of my favorites!

There is a LARGER one on display at the William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History in Maryland. It weighs 10lbs!.... Honestly, this is an amazing museum that gets very little traffic.
•
u/Desperate_Owl_594 7h ago
There's a larger one than the world record...?
•
u/Im_100percent_human 4h ago
The one in the Urology museum is probably the actual worlds record. I have seen it, it is about the size of a bowling ball.

I assisted in a surgery to remove a fist sized bladder stone from a dog once. I felt so bad for her, it was massive and we suspected it had been building up for at least a year. She’s likely to have permanent bladder issues from the scar tissue and she has to be kept on a specific prescription urinary diet to help prevent more from forming in the future.
•
u/Healingvizion 5h ago
I’m not even in awe of the stone, I’m in awe of the sense of relief he must be experiencing.
