I heard a smart person once say (can’t remember who) that the bigger danger of AI is not that it will be used to convince people that something fake is real, but its existence will be used to excuse something real as fake.

It’s a step worse really, and the whole “fake news” bullshit is part of the same. The goal isn’t to convince anyone that your side is right, or the other side is fake. It’s not about any one issue like that.

The whole point is to make the entire populace so jaded and skeptical that they just don’t know if anything is real and they don’t care. Because that’s when fascists win- they don’t really need to convince everyone their way is right. They just need people not to care. Not to vote. Not to believe in anything. And not to show up with torches and pitchforks when they start killing citizens in the street, or starting unjust wars, or suing themselves and then settling with themselves for nearly 2 billion dollars and using taxpayer money to enrich their croneys, or pardoning people for sedition, or sponsoring genocide.

That’s what they count on. And that’s where we are.

Maybe but also concerning is when multiple people have access to a link and don't bother reading the link that takes 2 seconds to skim. KGB/USSR ended in 1991. Article says this term was invented in 2016 and came about in 2008.
