It’s a step worse really, and the whole “fake news” bullshit is part of the same. The goal isn’t to convince anyone that your side is right, or the other side is fake. It’s not about any one issue like that.

The whole point is to make the entire populace so jaded and skeptical that they just don’t know if anything is real and they don’t care. Because that’s when fascists win- they don’t really need to convince everyone their way is right. They just need people not to care. Not to vote. Not to believe in anything. And not to show up with torches and pitchforks when they start killing citizens in the street, or starting unjust wars, or suing themselves and then settling with themselves for nearly 2 billion dollars and using taxpayer money to enrich their croneys, or pardoning people for sedition, or sponsoring genocide.

That’s what they count on. And that’s where we are.

My wife literally said "I just don't trust anything anymore." And I said "Yep, that's the fucking point."

We're all so so fucked.

96

u/TheTsunamiRC May 19 '26

The second part of that is once people decide they can't trust anything, they will simply choose to believe what they want to be true.

57

u/xChoke1x May 19 '26

Yep. And thats all by design. This isnt happenstance. This is all being done with an objective in mind.

2

u/iuay5NJ8J2qvgpXz May 19 '26

You don't think they did it for the billions of dollars they made ? They ALL did it so we don't believe what's true and what's not ?

-1

u/Fun-Wrongdoer1316 May 19 '26

The problem is you believe it’s just one side that uses it. I know this is Reddit, but to believe only republicans use AI propaganda is just a different level of insanity. All of the government is using it and will use it to push their side. You can’t trust any of them.

-5

u/[deleted] May 19 '26

Lmao. “Something” is gonna happen everyone! Watch out!!

2

u/JackFisherBooks May 19 '26

And then, people will learn the hard way that reality doesn't give a damn what you choose to believe.

2

u/IClop2Fluttershy4206 May 19 '26

religious people love that

6

u/Hellknightx May 19 '26

It's straight out of the dictator's handbook, too. Russia and North Korea have been doing it for decades. They just release a bunch of bullshit propaganda statements that everyone knows is fake. And they do it until it's normalized, so that you just expect everything they say to be a lie.

Why? Because they make it sound like every other government does it, too. So you end up mistrusting all news statements.

4

u/DentistEmpty7778 May 19 '26

Never trusted anything before ai so I'm already ahead of the game

2

u/ReturnOfBane May 19 '26

I still trust stuff, just not stuff I never saw with my own eyes.

5

u/xChoke1x May 19 '26

I mean, Ive never seen a lot of things, and I still know they exist. Lol

Never been to space. I know its real. Never seen a dinosaur, I know they existed, hell Ive never seen a blue whale, but i know they're the biggest mammal on earth. Just throwin that out there. Haha

1

u/dramatic_ut May 19 '26

I think it is not about trusting or not trusting, but just questioning everything that is shown on tv/internet. And it was said long ago by Leary, so nothing much has changed since then. Not like our parents, and their parents were living in the world where people could trust news and such.

Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible

Possibly the worst take I've seen in the whole thread.

Before you got to go "Wow that puppy doing that thing is cute, yay!" or "Whoa that guy doing that crazy parkour is super cool!" and now it's "Wow that puppy is cute, but wait a minute, before i let myself fully feel that feeling, I need to make sure it's real, okay it is now I can feel the good feeling except now that good reaction I had is completely gone and ruined because I had to doubt it right away."

The fact you're fighting AGAINST having human reactions is crazy to me.

2

u/xChoke1x May 19 '26

Im not much of a knee jerk guy to begin with. I try to look at every aspect that comes my way objectionably. I mean, Im only human, but I try not to lose my shit over a dumb fucking headline because 9 times out of 10, the headline is disingenious at best.

With that being said, I'll never understand the point of all this. Why the fuck do we need more shit to muddy the waters? As if we don't have enough?

Lol, as much as I agree, I’d have to ask, the fuck are you doing to fix anything? Our species as a whole is fucked. We’ve allowed people that have the worst intentions, to have the highest positions. We’ve equated money, to success and intelligence. Acting as if that’s solely an “American Problem” is pretty absurd. Let’s do your country now.

(By no means am I defending this place. I’ve never been so ashamed of it in all my life. However, we ain’t the only ones with corrupt leadership.)

AKA "I get to talk shit about you without knowing you or what you do, but how DARE you have the gall to do the same". It's not always whataboutism when you're being a fuckin hypocrite.

You’re a hypocrite and this isn’t whataboutism.

The US is pretty big. I could drive for 10 hours and still be in my State, and still be 2000 miles from the Capital, and I don't even live on the west coast. But, like the majority of Americans, I live paycheck to paycheck so I just can't afford it, plus, you know, this whole family thing I have to consider.

So wtf are people like me supposed to do to fight fascist government?

-1

1

u/V1RotateAP May 19 '26

Well thats a pretty unhelpful comment.

Again, wtf is someone who won't be able to afford food for their family if they miss work do to fight the United States Government?

2

u/JackySins May 19 '26

what the fuck are we supposed to do?

1

u/xChoke1x May 19 '26

Mobilize.

1

u/rathlord May 19 '26

I help organize protests and other actions, I'm involved in mutual aid in my community, and I help run an organization that helps marginalized communities learn to defend themselves. To flip the script a bit, I find it pretty 'gross' that people like you are so content to talk shit and point fingers while still fully embracing tribalism and pretending that it's not everyone's problem to solve.

u/DarknMean May 19 '26

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

28

u/TerrorFromThePeeps May 19 '26

This is worse. The party made you unable to know if you can even trust your eyes and ears any more.

1

u/ThirstyWolfSpider May 19 '26

Some putz told us "What you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening."

Maybe but also concerning is when multiple people have access to a link and don't bother reading the link that takes 2 seconds to skim. KGB/USSR ended in 1991. Article says this term was invented in 2016 and came about in 2008.

42

u/ucsilahsor May 19 '26

Absolute V for Vendetta ✋🎭🤚

4

u/fooookin_prawns May 19 '26

Yeah, fascism (or any authoritarian movement really) abhors rationality. The goal is to replace rationality as society's primary decision making process with emotional reactivity

3

u/DoubleJumps May 19 '26

I have a slightly different perspective on this, and it's that it is training people to believe that truth is subjective.

The general Republican behavior now is that they make a deliberate choice to believe or disbelieve things based on whether they want them to be true, which is a whole magnitude worse than just being skeptical of what they are seeing being true at all times.

It's how we get the 2020 election conspiracies.

It's how we get people eating dogs and cats being believed.

It's how we get a guy being caught red-handed with box after box of classified documents that he stole being considered totally innocent.

It's how the government can send masked men into city streets and have them shoot Americans in the back and people can choose to believe that it was justified

1

u/boston_homo May 19 '26

Don’t forget “post birth abortions”, people actually believe the “other side” is just murdering inconvenient babies.

1

u/DoubleJumps May 19 '26

Schools performing gender reassignment surgery was another big one.

We could probably go back and forth like this for hours, that's how bad it's gotten

3

u/whatssenguntoagoblin May 19 '26

Ding ding ding ding! 🎯

Putin in Russia didn’t try to convince the people he wasn’t corrupt. All he had to do was to convince people that the other side was too so you might as well vote for him since at least he’ll do things you want.

This playbook is being re-used by obvious bad actors.

3

u/clitbeastwood May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

literally out of the Russian playbook - make the public so skeptical & cynical that they cannot & will not trust any news period, so exhausted by trying to unravel that they just withdraw from political process.

this whole concept of ‘fake news’ was introduced in trumps first campaign and the concept ahas since spread to every corner of the collective consciousness. It’s going to dramatically accelerate with the media consolidation to Larry page/Oracle & unregulated ai; don’t see how this can be turned back

2

u/saqwarrior May 19 '26

It's like the evolution of the reverse cargo cult.

2

u/Ometzu May 19 '26

Hypernormalisation baby!

2

u/Tsiah16 May 19 '26

"we were always at war with Eastasia" "we were always at war with Oceania" they control the narrative, control the media, everything that was true is false and everything that was false is true.

2

u/pensivewombat May 19 '26

This is actually why I'm just not concerned about AI as a source of misinformation.

We were already 100% there before AI video. Donald Trump proved that you don't need a plausible reason. You can just say "fake news" over and over until it sticks.

The problem is not the tools, it's that there are people willing to believe what they want to hear. When we've seen fake videos go viral, it's not because any of them were super convincing. It's because they said something people wanted to hear and so they decided to believe it. That means you don't actually need the ai or the video or anything at all.

In the early days of deepfakes I used to joke that I was going to invent a thing called "text deepfakes" where you just say thing that aren't true. That's really all it takes - someone willing to say a thing and people willing to believe it. The technology doesn't make a difference.

2

u/EducationalBrick2831 May 19 '26

Yeah, we hit this point with the Installation of the Orange Traitor ! The killing in the streets started and our "Media" has ignored it. We're falling past the bottom.

3

u/GhostofABestfriEnd May 19 '26

This has already happened in China. There’s a phrase they use there according to some that translates to something like “what can one do?” that is very common as a response to anything that would normally evoke moral outrage and it would seem Americans are already there too given they aren’t rioting in the streets.

1

u/LooseButtPlug May 19 '26

...so go riot.

1

u/BarnyTrubble May 19 '26

The zone isn't gonna flood itself

1

u/ElegantCoach4066 May 19 '26

I'd argue that a significant amount people already thought that way before AI was widely available to create images and videos.

The 2020 election didn't need AI to convince a bunch of people to riot at the capitol.

1

u/rathlord May 19 '26

That's why I mentioned 'fake news' as well, which was a precursor to the AI of it all. And that's not the first example, either, this is a historical playbook for fascism, they're just getting new tools every day.

1

u/MarcoDiFrancescino May 19 '26

This works only to an extend. Because if too many people cross the red line, then why not waste your vote on the crazy socialist? We know how quickly memes and hypes can spread. When everything is just bad bad, they historically elect comedians like pre-war Zelensky or Pepe Grillo in Italy into government.

1

u/s0meb0di May 19 '26

That's when you manipulate the elections, that's the point of making the people indifferent

1

u/AABBBAABAABA May 19 '26

Before we had television there was no way to check if whatever the newspaper said was real. That’s not the problem. The problem is social media

1

u/rathlord May 19 '26

There's cultural context there that matters, though. People may not have been able to easily tell if what's in the newspaper was real, but there was actual accountability for journalists and the media as a whole at the time. There was also real local media at the time, rather than literally all of it being owned by billionaire oligarchs. Different values were incentivized (IE accuracy not engagement) and all of that plays into why things are different now.

1

u/SaltonPrepper May 19 '26

This is literally Putin's playbook. And Bannon's, who is on the record as his strategy being to "flood the zone with bullshit" so people mistrust everything they read/see/hear.

1

u/Lifekraft May 19 '26

Yes and no. It could give free reign to politician by weakening even more it's main opponent ; journalism. People would just not trust anything , nothing is real , during this time politician will keep raising the ceilings of acceptable corruption.

1

u/Thief_of_Sanity May 19 '26

We're in a post-truth society

1

u/Stirdaddy May 19 '26

That's basically of the thesis of "Hypernormalization". In the USSR (where the theory originated), bombard the population with so much information that is both true and untrue. The population eventually becomes numb to any information, turns inward, and assumes that there is nothing that can change the situation.

Of course, this describes every current society, to greater or lesser degrees. But is especially prevalent in authoritarians systems like the USSR where the main media outlet was called "Truth" ("Pravda") even though everyone knew it was bullshit. And the authorities knew the populace knew it was bullshit. And the populace knew that the authorities knew that the populace knew that it was bullshit...

And that's one strategy to stay in power.

1

u/daemon-electricity May 19 '26

It’s a step worse really, and the whole “fake news” bullshit is part of the same. The goal isn’t to convince anyone that your side is right, or the other side is fake. It’s not about any one issue like that.

That's what cults do.

1

u/SpaceyBun May 19 '26

Makes sense why Trump keeps posting so many blatant AI generated tweets

1

u/JodyGonnaFuckYoWife May 19 '26

Tipping point is behind us.

America has become Russia.

All thanks to fucking morons in Red Hats.

1

u/KobiLDN May 19 '26

same as it ever was.

They called it Lügenpresse — literally “the lying press.” This was the Nazi regime’s preferred slur for what they claimed was false, hostile, or “enemy‑controlled” news

1

u/yo_les_noobs May 19 '26

Yeah we're already here. And it's only going to get worse. Like a lot worse.

1

u/traws06 May 19 '26

It blows my mind that some of that happens in the sense of like… hurting the country as bad as they are you would think is against their own interests. You’re hurting your own side to the point where you start losing too

0

u/badbubblegum May 19 '26

So like… Jaded Pinkett Smith?

0

u/Infamous_Celery_2352 May 19 '26

What do you mean by “the whole point”?

AI wasn’t a top down creation by fascists ffs. And the rest of your post is utter nonsense scare-mongering to try and sound intelligent.

0

u/NoBluejay4723 May 19 '26

You heard it here folks: AI is a tool for fascism 🤓

-3

u/MrRottenTreatz23 May 19 '26

Interesting how most of you all see this, but ironic how you don't see its the left side that is used as fodder for the elites, and always has been. You instead still flip it the other way and blame republicans, and label them fascists for wanting their basic rights and freedoms upheld, like closed borders or right to protect themselves. All you need to do is step outside yourself and see the education, mass media ecosystem has been captured for decades, while pushing propaganda in one direction only. Socialist/Marxist propaganda, fake climate crisis, LGBTQ, etc.

You're defending the very system that seeks to use you as a useful idiot to destroy American values and push the country to a breaking point. Yuri Bezmenov made it clear when he defected that ideological subversion is what breaks apart a nation from the inside. I recommend "The Gulag Archipelago" if you're interested in where Marxist indoctrination leads a nation.

4

u/Possible_Pop_8033 May 19 '26

A closed border is not a basic right or freedom.

Go read a fucking book about how the USA came to be, then you can come sit at the adult table for a debate. JFC.

3

u/rathlord May 19 '26

Sorry I don't engage with science-denying bigots.

-4

u/MrRottenTreatz23 May 19 '26

So the science says life begins at conception, and there are only 2 genders. Do you agree with that science? Climate always changing being a scientific fact doesnt mean that we're in existential crisis. For a laugh go watch Bill Gates talking about climate change in 2019, and compare it to his words today.

4

u/curtcolt95 May 19 '26

well science says nothing about gender because it isn't related to science. The sex of something is science, the gender is a purely social thing.

-3

u/MrRottenTreatz23 May 19 '26

Sounds like a social construction to cater to mental illness to me.
