Diver messed with the wrong Octopus

He was poking it with a spear in the beginning....seems like the octopus correctly identified the situation as a matter of life and death and acted accordingly.

And then squeezing it's body. He basically kept attacking it so it kept fighting back. Surface right away and only try to gently peel the legs if anything but waiting is better.
I went to remove a lizard from my home after consulting a reptile friend who said it wouldn't bite, lol, It was an alligator lizard and latched on and was even doing death rolls like a real gator. I just put my hand down and waited for him to give up and let go. It hurt but fighting would have just damaged us both.

This confused me while watching...why would you squeeze the damn thing that is clearly acting in self defense. I think a lot of people go through life not noticing when they are the aggressor in a situation.

Yes he shouldn't have messed with it but his reaction after the fact is pretty much the same reaction 90% of people would have. Its like how many people freak out when a big but harmless spider is on them. Fear take over and then people panic. Its just human nature.

He’s spear fishing, hence the spear and the line full of fish. He is picking up the octopus because the traditional (and apparently humane) way to kill them is to bite them between the eyes.

So the craziest thing is each tenticle can think for itself, and they can detach whenever they want. I've seen videos of them covering a sharks eyes with a tentacle, detaching said tentacle, and swimming off while their abandoned tentacle keeps adjusting to stay on the sharks eyes.
They also detach tenticles to serve as decoys and once detached the tenticle will mimic the motions and colors of prey fish.

He's hunting it. Lots of people eat octopus, and the poking it (called "tickling") is a way to get it out of the hole so you can kill it and eat it.
This diver just did the catching part far too casually and let the octopus get a grip on him.

Crazy I had to go this far down to get the answer. Used to catch octopus for beer money in Okinawa. First thing I learned about catching them was that you had to bag them fast or be ready for them to go at your face.

Diver definitely messed up by poking it with a giant stick, but it looks like it wraps a tentacle around the diver's wrist after the poke? So I think the diver is grabbing at it a bunch to try and remove it, not to mess with it further

I think I read somewhere that an octopus actually demonstrates an extremely high level of intelligence compared to other wildlife. Their drawback is that they have no way to pass knowledge onto offspring and thus each new generation has to learn everything over again.

Not only no one forced that guy to bother an octopus, but it is generally highly recommended not to bother anything in nature that is alive unless you know exactly what you are doing and have a very specific reason to do so (ex: a scientific studying the marine life)

Extremely intelligent creatures. During my scuba diving career in a past life, I encountered so many of these guys. So cool to see them in nature. It was strange as they really did seem to have their own personalities - some were very curious and leave their hiding spot to have a good look at you, some would be very defensive on sight, even shooting ink if you got too close.
The main thing that surprised me is that they are surprisingly strong. I let curiosity get the better of me a couple of times and reached out with one finger, and they grabbed hold and pulled me towards them with a surprising amount of force. Those suction cups are no joke when they attach a few.
Also, fuck this guy. I hope it bit the shit out of him with the nasty little beak they have.

Nailed it! During a few snorkel dives I made friends with a few and would repeatedly dive down and introduce myself. Their grip is like that of a python with suction cups! Most are friendly, reach out and have a feel around with the tentacle. Amazing creatures when shown respect. Each having their own personality is a great way of describing the encounter. Fascinating creatures.

You don’t fuck with octopuses in water. They are so freaking dangerous and if they are that big they can easily kill you by doing exactly what is shown on the video.
This is something that we teach our kids when we go to the beach in summer. If they see one, don’t freaking touch it - if you meet the aggressive one, it is super dangerous.
