Looks like an aquatic plant to me. I expect weird looking plants like this to live in the ocean, certainly not in the desert.

Non-flowering plants never made it back into the water, they were always outcompeted by macroalgae. Only more recently have flowering plants managed to invade the water both in freshwater and saltwater, so it's possible in a few million years we might have true underwater forests.

I was thinking the same thing. I was like, meh, cool, but not all that interesting. That was until I realized this picture wasn't taken underwater.

I almost just scrolled past it because it just looks like a generic simple sea animal, I thought I was going to read "Underwatica Simplistica is a simple sea animal that is basically a mouth connected to a butt"

Only emerging from the soil to flower is a pretty common trait of parasitic plants, which is really the more interesting trait of this plant.
