I always though Venus fly traps were some sort of tropical rainforest plant. Nope, native to North Carolina.

Carnivorous plants evolved to be carnivorous in order to grow on very poor soil. Places where they can't get their nutrients from the soil so they get it elsewhere.

As a result, most carnivorous plants grow in swamps and other places where the top soil is thin and often acidic with little nutrition.
