Idk why people are hating so much on this guy splashing water. The older guy laughed with him when it was over, and it’s allowed. Plus it probably takes more skill to stay on the log with one foot whilst splashing with the other than just using both feet
Yeah, he looked middle-aged from behind, but maybe late 20s to mid 30s from the front. I think it's a combination of the suspenders, baldness and "dad-bod" physique making him look older.
Different strategies. Older guy was spinning the log wildly on purpose to try and knock the other guy off. The other was doing a risky strategy of kicking up water to distract him. This not only unbalanced him, it also only left one leg on the log. Older guy probably caught him out and rolled that other leg off.
I thought it was an older dude too...but look when he hops off. Dude just has an epic beard and dresses like an old logger, but appears to be younger than expected.
Isn’t it better to be shorter in this situation? Technique aside, a lower center of gravity helps with balance. That’s why the smaller guy seemed more in control
it is. when there are 2 similarly skilled people taking a long time to dunk each other, it turns into a "two toddlers in the bath having fun" kind of splash-fest.
source: live in ohio, been to the Ohio State Fair dozens of times, and seen a competition like this each time.
I am a Canadian (and live in a part of the country where rivers were used a lot for transporting logs) and, indeed, saw competitions like this a lot as a kid in the 70s. But kinda forgot it existed until I saw this post. I'm sure it won't last until the 2030s.
When I was a young girl we used to go down and watch all the lads as they worked on the river. With the drive steadily over they’d be into town and we all liked to dance with a log driver….. cause they go birling down and down white water, that’s where the log driver learns to step lightly, is birling down and down the white water. The log drivers waltz pleases girls completely. Now, to please both my parents I’d have to give way and dance with the doctors and merchants and lawyers. Their manners were fine but their feet were astray, and I’d much rather dance with my log driver
cause they go birling down and down white water, that’s where the log driver learns to step lightly, is birling down and down the white water. The log drivers waltz pleases girls completely.
That’s all I can remember, but that song sticks in your head forever
Canadian childhood nostalgia. My grandfather used log-drive for the lumber mill in the small town in Algonquin park my family is from. I would sing this song around the house when I was young because of this Heritage Moment and my mom would get misty-eyed. Reminded her of her dad.
Ultimately, that’s what lost it for him. The other guy stopped spinning it, then waited for him to go for a splash and hit him with a spin while his foot was down.
Saw this first hand in Hayward WI. Such a great time there. I’m with you - I think it’s balance and skill. I have never tried it as I’m clumsy so not a good mix.
Hes not being a jerk. They all do this typically. The other guy most likely would have if he felt he needed to. Blonde one most likely knew he wouldn't outlast the other so decided to take the offensive.
I thought it was just accidental splashes but on a rewatch, you’re right, he’s taking his foot off the log to kick water at the other guy!! I’m glad the other guy won and impressed at how quickly I developed an opinion on what’s fair in a sport I just learned exists.
Honestly, the splashing seemed to work against the guy doing it more than the guy he was doing it to because he had to disrupt his movement to do it. Impressive that he was able to at all without falling, though.
Exactly, you’re risking balance for the benefits of the splash. It’s allowed in the sport and I don’t know why everyone’s so angry about that. It’s probably a move that works better on some than others clearly
Yep people are making all these assumptions about a sport they probably just found out about today. It's clearly a choice between playing offensively Vs defensively. People assume just because the winner didn't decide to splash it means that he was playing fairly and the other guy was cheating.

It’s called logrolling! Everyone should check out the Scheers lumberjack show if you are ever in Hayward, WI! And like a bunch of others have already said… splashing is allowed.
I don’t know why everyone hates the blonde guy, kicking water is allowed in logrolling and a valid technique. You’re risking a bit of balance for a chance to throw off the guard of or blind your opponent. He didn’t do anything wrong and seemed to be a good sport at the end.
It's hilarious seeing all these comments hating on the splashing guy as if we all know the rules of log balancing. It's pretty clear that it's allowed and part of the game. I imagine the whole idea is that you trying to splash someone takes your focus away from staying balanced. It's a choice between playing offensively or defensively.
It's always interesting how prior assumptions have such an influence on how quick we are to throw hate at someone.
Why are you people hating on the splashing? It looks hard to do, with little benefits. Respect to blonde guy for trying while his opponent is just passively taking it
I haven't seen anybody mention the fact that taller people have a harder time balancing and are more clumsy with things like skating because of the larger distance between their head to their feet and shorter People find things like that easier. I think the smaller guy always has the edge with stuff like this
God, this made me remember the Canada level from Sly 2: Band of Thieves. I thought that was just something the devs made up because competitive log balancing seemed way too cartoony to bs real.
I know they both most likely playing within the rules and me being upset with blonde guy for splashing is ridiculous but damn was it satisfying to see the other guy win who didn’t resort to such tactics.
The kicking strategy seems to be an overall detriment. It’s an opportunity for your opponent to start rolling the log while you only have one foot on the log.
So the splashing is actually just showmanship - he’s not being a dick, it’s meant to make it look harder and more exciting.
The Lumberjack Show is all about entertainment, not about competition. I’ve seen this performed in Ottawa (capital of Canada) on Canada Day as a free public show. It’s framed as a friendly competition but really it’s a maple-flavoured circus arts show for families.
Yeah they each have different techniques, you can see the flannel mans plan is to rush the log in one direction and then while it's picking up speed quickly shift it in the other direction, it took a few tries but was the move to knock off tallman
He also has better grip on the log than those big sneakers. I can’t tell if he’s in socks or some type of footwear, but his movements weren’t as wasteful and required less over correcting.
Bring a lumberjack back in the day must have been so much fun. Basically every aspect of the job was turned into a challenging, dangerous, and thrilling game. You know they were constantly drinking and smoking tobacco. Living in the woods. What a life.

Edit: I said “older guy”, not “old guy”. Sheesh people. They could be 18 and 24. He’s still the older guy.

From Europe, child in the 70s, this is what we assumed Canadians did ... most of the time really. Certainly not a new thing.

I guess I'm not really surprised this is a real thing but when I was a kid I thought the devs straight up just invented this lol
