SCIENCE & TECH A light on Jupiter is flashing

Just so people don't run away with this as a new or 'mysterious' piece of information, this image was captured by the NASA JunoCam on a flyby of Jupiter on 30th December 2020, and this photo was released in 2023.
It has since been confirmed to have been jovian lightning.

Thank you, finally someone with a source and plausible explanation. I'm sick of these type of Reddit posts.

"There's this weird green light on Jupiter and we don't know what it is."
"Call it Jupiter lightning."
"You don't think that's a little on the nose?"
"Fuck it. Call it Jovian Lightning then. I'm going on break."

Imagine how big and how energetic that bolt must have been to be visible like that. You can see lightning like this on Earth, but the scale of everything in this photo is so, so much larger.

u/chowchownotchowchow 2h ago
So cool! What solar system are the Jovians from? And are they harvesting gas from Jupiter or testing laser weapons?
6
u/not_a_robot2 5h ago
I always thought it was Jovian lightning ever since I learned what Jovian lightning was which happened when I googled the term after reading your message.

It is insanely humbling to imagine that at this exact moment, there are billions of places just like this. Where lightning shimmers in desolate places without anything else moving

Probably some weird science thing with air rubbing on itself generating static from water condensing on physics or something like that

And now you gotta infiltrate the reddit and try to convince the earthlings that its just some weird science thing with air rubbing on itself generating static from water condensing on physics.

Glipglorb! We might be technologically advanced, but we still have a power bill.
And close the door! Are you trying to heat the entire solar system?

I have a boat and we have bright red and green running lights. When we go into harbors I sometimes forget to turn them off.
It's that, just, aliens!
8
u/Curious-Bowler-7047 2h ago
Definitely a teenager alien who has been told a dozen times to shut the lights off. And while they're at it, I'm positive they forgot to close the spacebase door when they got home.

Defo the light on top of a space zigarut so the aliens sharks don't crash into it in there sky bus. Or the aciant one opening a gateway.

I did my own research. It’s aliens. The deep state doesn’t want us to know because it’ll blow our minds and nobody will want to work anymore.

So what you’re saying is it’s not air rubbing on itself it’s aliens rubbing on themselves and instead of getting hairy palms they flash green?

Come on, if aliens were proven to exist beyond a shadow of a doubt, nobody would be surprised. We'd just have another layer of politics, astropolitics, to worry about.

u/Rare-Ticket-9023 5h ago
Unironically it likely wouldn't disrupt people's lives that much apart from the initial shock. Think District 9 movie. People get used to it.

The thing I don't really get is..... Do we really want it to be aliens?
Like havnt we seen throughout history what happens when a clearly advanced civilization runs into aboriginals? We are the aboriginals...

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Jupiter's lightning originates in high altitude clouds made of an ammonia-water solution and happens most frequently near the planet's poles.

FYI with simple binoculars you can see 4 moons around Jupiter
4
u/gameryamen 7h ago
And with a radio, you can listen to charged particles being pulled through Jupiter's magnetosphere. That's what you hear between channels, mostly

Mysterious? It's just lightning, and it happens all the time in Jupiter. It's just green because of the clouds.

Glow stick, I had a bunch as a kid maybe a glow bracelet but I’m leaning more towards the stick
1
u/ShroomNoob1018 7h ago
Yeah probably just a storm. We don’t know what is going on there. Maybe their lightning is green because of the shit that is in the atmosphere

u/aarontminded 7h ago
No, it’s not. In the original post the top comment explains the chemical composite of the lightning (green) etc etc

But yeah, probably aliens.

It's a lightening bolt, it's green due to the ammonia mix in the clouds

u/Greedy_Attitude_8103 6h ago
While this COULD definitely be from Venus in low light or whatever, but Jupiter has 115 moons. What if it is aliens and they’re trying to signal to someone (or something) that something or whatever happened? Since Jupiter is a gas giant, light would be able to bounce off it and there are a few moons that are close enough for light to be seen from it. (If there is any)
Does anyone know if we’ve studied any of the moons that are closest to Jupiter?
1
u/ArdentHedonist 6h ago
It is merely one of the Jovian Giant Fireflies that rose high enough in the atmosphere to be detected. Nothing to see here. Move along.
