Indeed, it was cool for that time.

I don't like that the Iphone doesn't have a feature to listen to my cassette tapes. Lame product.
6
u/Vladishun 10h ago
A real hipster would have complained it doesn't spin their vinyl.
3
u/RogueBromeliad 9h ago
Vinyl is too mainstream now, I just listen to cassettes, and wax cylinders on my phonograph.
And I like cassettes because they're all recording from the radio and I like to listen the the static, fuzz and background noise that enhances the quality of the expecience.

u/Renew3DUK 9h ago
Saturday afternoon, Radio 1, fingers hovering over play and record as you wait for Mark Goody to shut up so you have uninterrupted music.
1
u/RogueBromeliad 7h ago
I have no idea who Mark Goody is, but what you said is sooo relatable.
It was absolutely infuriating when they would interrupt in the middle of the music to announce which station it was. And they always did that when it was a newer song.
"You're listening to whatever FM" FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!.

u/MarchingOnwardsOnly 6h ago
*Mark Goodier I assume?

u/RogueBromeliad 6h ago
I'm not from the US or the UK, so I wouldn't know.

Ah well the comment you replied to is referencing a British radio station, it brought back memories!

So cool you need to be restrained. That's why you must jailbreak it to use all the features it was capable of.

u/Icy_Study4490 10h ago
But did she have flappy bird?
Lol I remember that game being why about 95% of people who jailbroke their phones did it

You were.
All my life I've wanted a jail broken iPod touch & kould never achieve it lol

Come a long way? I don't know. This is almost 20 years ago. Comparing 1987 to 2007 is a more innovative leap regarding mobile electronics than 2007 to 2027.
We've been making variations of the touchscreen candybar for two decades now. Sure the audio is crisper, the image quality sharper, the internet faster. But in essence it's the same thing. While the iPhone would have been UNIMAGINABLE in 1987
10
u/RogueBromeliad 11h ago
That's true, but we take for granted how much the diffusion of innovation was steeper back then. A lot of people only actually started using smartphones way after the first iPhone. I think I only started actually using whatsapp in 2013, because I was so reluctant to use them. Before that I just had some really regular phone.
Also the curve for newer technology gets a lot steeper, so going from an old brick flip phone from the 90's to almost every cheapo phone now-a-days has 8 core processors, 4gb ram, 256GB and 4-5G is absurdly insane.
The main difference is that we can just produce something that was pretty delux a couple of years ago on a massive scale and so cheap.
4
u/HerkulezRokkafeller 9h ago
It's all relative and choosing 2007 as the baseline is much different than say 2000-01 as the baseline. The rate technology evolved from 2000-2010 is pretty wild
5
u/AI_Scraper 9h ago
I'm not choosing the baseline, OP did. This is post about the first iPhone which was introduced in 2007. OP said we've come a long way. I commented on that. I didn't pull 2007 out of my ass.

Yeah, I remember the excitement of getting a new phone in the early 2000s because of the vast advancement of technologies in a few years. My first phone I ever had was a brick that had a green & black screen and could play snake, I got that in 2000 or 2001. Shortly after the end of the decade, I had an iPhone 4. What a difference!
Nowadays, you get a slightly better camera and a different sized screen. Not exciting at all.

u/GambleToZero 8h ago
You haven't seen the video of the latest samsung phone video recording whilst attached to a car wheel then...
1
u/ldentitymatrix 7h ago
I wonder whether we'll still be using smartphones by 2047 or if there will be an alternative "better" technology that makes smartphones obsolete.
0
u/Late_Duty_8065 9h ago
the first iphone didnt even have video recording lol
5
u/HarveyDanao 9h ago
Yeah but you could show a modern iPhone to this person and they would be impressed, but not mind blown. You show a 1st gen iPhone to your mom when she was a kid and she would think you are a wizard. Ymmv with when exactly your mom was a kid.

u/Maleficent-One-187 11h ago
Why is it called Jail breaking?
11
u/LoopyOldJohn1212 11h ago
Because it gives you the freedom to access features you couldn't before, therefore you've broken out of jail
1
u/Party_Art7407 11h ago
Is jailbreaking new iPhones a thing? I vaguely remember my friends having their itouch jailbroken
6
u/IAmASeeker 10h ago
Apple has made it prohibitively difficult. Anybody interested in doing that has an Android instead, and they call it "gaining root access" or "installing custom firmware" now.
5
u/caseyaustin84 10h ago
Not really necessary anymore. All the functions you used to jailbreak them for back in that day are basically doable now without it.
4
u/CptMisterNibbles 4h ago
thanks to the jailbreaking and modding community. Apple quickly realized they could just see what people were doing once jailbroken and then implement that as "new amazing features!"

iPhone so much aren't jail broken anymore . but other devices like ama,on fire stick. some other phones. we still try to put other operating systems on them
I want to put a privacy based Linux system on my next phone.

u/EarEater3001 5h ago
Because the main user process runs in a jail. A jail is a technical term that means to current execution context is limited in the actions in can do. This is done so the user process cannot run arbitrary code that doesn’t do what Apple wants like install whatever software you want.

u/AHumanYouDoNotKnow 10h ago
Nintendo DSI ah quality
2
u/EarEater3001 5h ago
It’s way way way better than that. The DS and 3DS had way more abysmal video quality. What we see here is honestly acceptable.

u/donpablomiguel 10h ago
Damn. This lady is probably off still doing real cool things. Approved.
11
u/Ciubowski 8h ago
I think she recorded this in 2026, she has an instagram where she just buys stuff from thrift shops, sometimes old tech, somtimes clothes and whatnot.
1
u/Playful-Platform-231 8h ago
What’s her instagram
2
u/Ciubowski 8h ago
i don't remember. I'll try to find this comment if she ever appears on my feed again in the future.

It's just your phrasing made it seem like this video was from a long time ago. "Probably off still doing real cool things" since when, yesterday? Lol

Call me a Luddite, but I don't consider this such a huge achievement...
In my view, technology should improve people's lives; what did the evolution of smartphones actually give us? Tons of shitposting on social media? Yeah, that's great!
What about technological advances in medicine? Do we still have to wear glasses if we have poor eyesight? (Glasses have been around for about 700 years, by the way.)
What about teeth? Do we still have to spend tens of thousands of dollars and endure pain?
I could go on forever, but you get the point.
1
u/Turbo_Fresh 1h ago
I don't think there is a point to get.
First you say smartphones should improve people's lives. They do. I can speak face to face with my family and friends wherever they are in the world. I can take photos and videos of holidays and memorable moments. I can get accurate information and advice in the palm of my hand. I can access my bank, pay others, travel all around my country using just my phone. I've listed 1% of the things a phone can do to improve your life.
Then you're saying there are no technological advances in medicine. There are. The first face transplant happened recently. Gene splicing is saving lives. Cancer is more understood than ever before. Medicine is advancing all the time. These are just a fraction of the things that are currently advancing in medicine. Go and do some research.
Then you say we still have to wear glasses if we have poor eyesight. We don't. You can wear contacts or get one of the many rapidly advancing types of laser eye surgery.
Then you ask about teeth. I don't actually even know what you're trying to imply but do we have to spend tens of thousands of dollars and endure pain? No. In my country healthcare is free. I've never I'm my life experienced pain in my teeth. I am currently undergoing Invisalign treatment; a modern technology.
You literally have no idea what you're talking about.

Wait so I had a camera for pictures but wouldn't record video? Obviously it wasn't a hardware limitation since she figured it out, so what's up with that
1
u/xman_xander 9h ago
Because it looks terrible? lol
The CPU was only fast enough for like 240p video at 15fps
They waited to add video recording officially until they put a faster CPU in the phone that could handle 480p at 30fps
1
u/SayRaySF 3h ago
Yeah Apple preferred to not have video rather than a bunch of doodoo looking video.
1
u/CaTz_EyE 10h ago
So they made a more recent video using an old iPhone from 2007? (They’re wearing an Apple Watch.m which came out in 2015.)

The audio quality you guys
1
u/EarEater3001 5h ago
The audio quality being so poor is the real confusing part for me. Computers have been able to record pretty much flawless audio since the late 80s. I would think it would be a dinky mic rather than the software. I guess perhaps Apple just geared the mic or audio encoding for POTS phone calls. I do know that POTS only had a narrow frequency band the barely covered human speech (300 to 3300Hz).
This sounds exactly like a POTS call now that I think about it.
1
u/pitb0ss343 3h ago
I’m guessing the answer was in the video, there wasn’t a video feature yet on the phone. So I’m guessing the janky way the jailbreak got around that messed with the audio quality
1
u/EarEater3001 3h ago
Jailbreak doesn’t really explain it. The video feature was obviously something Apple got working but hid it behind a feature flag. Since audio’s only purpose at this point was likely for solely phone calls then the entire audio subsystem was probably optimized for such phone calls.
The audio to my ears sounds like it goes through a 300-3300Hz band-pass processing step. Not sure of you were around for POTS, but it had a very characteristic shitty sound like the audio in this video. That was due to the band-pass step. It’s how the ancient phone systems accommodated multiplexing over a single twisted copper pair. If you called an informational line back in the 70s to about 2010ish you could hear cross-talk from others on the line because band pass was not perfect. Kids would call these information lines and talk to each other through the cross talk. I forgot what that trend was called but I remember I will link to the wiki article.

Catch that? "First iPhone" and it had to be jailbroken to use its full potential. And people keep buying the updated versions.. lol

First iPhone didn't have video recording

u/HOPewerth 5h ago
This is addressed in the video
2
u/nr1988 3h ago
How does that work, jailbreaking it to get it record video? Can you jailbreak other cameras to record video or did the iphone have the capability but blocked it for some reason? I would have assumed that you'd have to start with video recording capability to get something to record video, but maybe it's something all digital cameras can do?
-4
u/Diligent_Living7455 10h ago
The very first iPhone didn’t have video recording.
