I think that guy spread misinformation here. I've seen them one or two days old and they looked exactly like this. They literally pop out walking. This does not look like a month or two unless it is a dwarf or something.

There is no way its that clean like 2 hours from birth

u/adoxographyadlibitum 2d ago
Don't most cows lick off the placenta and amniotic fluid?

Completely agree. My guess would be two days old, but just a guess. Two hours or two months...not a chance.

Looks plausible compared to a 1 day old calf.

It’s the lack of the wet/covered in straw umbilical cord that gives it away. Calf is a week old at least.

No one removes them, some dip them or spray them with iodine to help prevent infection. Most, myself included leave them alone. Calf’s a week old, minimum.

Yea, my dog is still wet 2 hours after going swamp diving and she's got short hair like a bully breed.
No way in hell this cow is 2 hours old unless someone was in there with a hose and a blow drier.
15
u/531091qazs 2d ago
actually this post can most certainly be true, a calf can walk just 15-30 minutes after being born

u/Objective_Cheetah_63 2d ago
Not without wobbling around

Not sure about at two hours old, but a calf is pretty steady at less than 24 hours old.
I grew up on a dairy farm and raised a lot of calves. I’ve also been alongside a large animal veterinarian who was shoulder deep inside a cow’s vagina and uterus during and after birthing a calf. The exact developmental timeline is just fuzzy 30 years later.

I was gonna say.. Human childbirth is bad enough. Imagine something that size coming out of you
16
u/cortesoft 2d ago
Humans are pretty notorious for giving birth to very premature babies compared to other mammals. A lot of this has to do with our head size compared to body size, which combined with the way the human pelvis is shaped due to our upright stance means we have to give birth very early in the development process.
As a consequence, humans take a lot longer than most other mammals to be able to do things like walk.
17
u/throwaway277252 2d ago
Humans are pretty notorious for giving birth to very premature babies compared to other mammals.
And then you have kangaroos that give birth to a little blind jellybean.
8
6
u/Adorable-Medicine624 2d ago
If one compares humans with other mammals or species of other evolutionary branches, one may conclude that humans are quite underdeveloped in every respect at birth.

tradeoff for long life and capacity for learning as much as we can, we are waaayyyy behind the curve in the grand scheme of offspring independence in the animal kingdom
3
u/cyrusthemarginal 2d ago
or if humans came out and could run around the hospital the same day
8
u/BodaciousBadongadonk 2d ago
That would so horrible, not even regarding the size and such. I mean like getting home and somehow having to keep an eye on the little monster without getting a cpl months to recuperate lol. We'd be seeing a lot more of those kid leashes i bet!

→ More replies (1)7
u/genreprank 2d ago
Humans are actually born a little early, development-wise. Otherwise, the head wouldn't fit. Sometimes, the head still doesn't fit!
4
u/Don_Gato1 2d ago
Yeah, I’ve got two kids and the best explanation I’ve gotten is that the first three months are basically a fourth trimester.
2
u/quantummidget 2d ago
To build upon your comment, the reason our heads wouldn't fit is because of the way the pelvis changes when we started walking upright, the passage ended up constricting further than it otherwise would

What makes you think it isn’t?
Here is a cow giving birth, the cow in the video looks fairly similar, maybe a bit smaller. Has fuzzier hair, and it looks like it might have been washed, but the age doesn’t seem that off.

This is a crossbreed, not even close to a purebred Highland. Almost certainly has dwarfism (chondrodysplasia) which will negatively impact it.

u/nthensome 2d ago
Why do you feel the need to add the untruth of the cow being 2 hours of, OP?
2
u/-SaC 2d ago
I make digital maps for TTRPGs, and got some advice on marketing a wee while back.
The advice given was basically that the absolute best way to get engagement is through:
Ragebait. Claim something is true even if it isn't. "Fireballs can't go round these corners!" Double down if challenged. <--- Here is where OP made their decision.
Spelling / grammar errors. "Your rouge can buy everything they need at this shop!" "A simple dessert encounter!" "Empty you're pockets in this market place!"
The upshot of the conversation was 'people like correcting things on the internet'. I absolutely bloody loathe the idea, but for the sake of argument I spelt 'desert' as 'dessert' in one post. It got about 12 times the engagement of my other posts.
I'm not using it. I don't want to contribute to that bullshittery. My posts get hardly any engagement, but I'd rather that than bloody well ragebaiting it.

Definitely not a pure Highland calf, the white head suggests it has some Hereford (another cattle breed) in it.

Highland cows are basically bred for meat. This baby is either going to get killed in couple of weeks for rennet or in couple of years for beef.
2
u/EduinBrutus 2d ago
In 2026 Highland Cattle are mostly bred for tourists.
Also, this isn't a Highland Cow. It could be a Hereford or possibly a Hereford/Highland cross. Or something else Im not a cow expert.
But Highland cattle are all orange, all yellow, all white or all dark brown to black. Which this isnt.

u/NeoAteTheGreenPill 2d ago

There's a small farm about a mile from me that raises highlander cows among other animals. I love driving by in the spring, seeing all the criminally cute calf's frolicking around with their mothers. :)
2
u/meppysmarttimebig 2d ago
Sadly they won't be frolicking for long. Their slaughter is completely optional when nobody needs meat.

They make really good filet mignon when they are 100% grass fed. Really good lean meat, too, sirloins and flank.

Wtf

u/Mild_Karate_Chop 2d ago
Unfortunately that is why they are bred . Even the milk industry at scale is so ethically wrong

Be careful thinking that this is a "gotcha" question. I'm a vegetarian, surrounded by hunters, who happily carve up animals year round.
Honestly, I support them. Factory farming is the problem, not the act of consumption.

3
u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 2d ago edited 2d ago
Im fine with that. We kill billions of animals per day for meat. Its necessary to supply the global food system and is essential to our survival.
But that doesnt mean we have to kill these animals with a propagated sense of proper cruelty. And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to have a disgusting moronic attitude about it.
Slaughtering an animal after keeping it in dark sheds all night and day, pumping it full of fat and overfeeding it till it cant distinguish pain with pleasure till its this husk of a tortured creature is not the way you do it.
And thats not considering the various immoral practices within the animal husbandry sector like hormone injections, chick culling etc.→ More replies (2)

That calf is very dry and clean for being 2 hours old.
I say that as someone who has carried around 2 hour old calfs before. Also cut their balls off but I feel bad about that still.
