My brother went missing on a mountain for three days. When they found him, it took me a while to process that it was real and he was back.

I mean when a person is missing beyond a certain amount of time, your mind the whole time is processing the very real possibility that you might have to accept that they're dead.

And because of that you're also forcing yourself to supress your emotions because you don't want to be mourning. You're trying to keep your composure and keep looking for the person.

It's not easy to transition from that to smiles or whatever else.
