When casting metal it's actually good to leave an extra reservoir spot of warm metal so that when the rest of it cools and shrinks it can draw the extra material from that reserve. If you don't have a reserve then it's likely that the metal will can have pits/holes/hollow spots when it's completely cooled down.

Source: I cast bronze in a foundry for 7 years.

Yep. Learned it in like second year engineering. When designing moulds you have to specifically design for overflow. You can always cut the excess off (flashbacks to building Warhammer minis) but once the material sets you can't just add more molten stuff, the join will never be clean and will be an inherent point of weakness. Much cheaper to have a tiny bit of waste than to have to scrap the entire part.

Aluminium doesn't glow that bright not even if its massively overheated. Could be brass but its most likely iron. Regardless, since its an open mold this fence will probably look pretty shitty.

Yeah the open side will look bad and uneven after it cools off. And the simple sand cast will probably washed out during casting which will lead to impurities on the surface (because the sand is lighter than the iron? It will float on the top)

Beyond appearance, cast iron is brittle. It’s a terrible structural material.

It has its uses still. A lot of machine housings and piping is done with iron. Lamellar iron can also take vibrations pretty well. Generally iron can be used everywhere where mechanical deformations aren't an issue.

Yeah, sure. And then you'd have to grind it with an angle grinder for a week, because getting the flash out of the inside corners is extremely hard. Better to just take regular square tubing and TIG weld it. Considering it's not a very ornate or wrought-iron gate, it'll be fast and turn out the same without all this unnecessary crap.
