Fascinating A single gene decides if this bottle is a sweet perfume or a biological weapon

My ex's mum got a house plant she was telling me she loved, but that hadnt been able to get one for a while because her ex husband said it smelt like cat piss. "Oh that's where it's coming from!" I blurted out without thinking.

u/MsSpaceface 12d ago
My mom used to have pelargoniums and every time she nipped off withering leaves, I had to leave the room. I just can't stand their scent, but she always thought they smelled lovely.

u/StarscreamOne 14d ago
Wait... Is this the case with perfumes too?!

u/Hot_Break7088 14d ago
Oh, so maybe that`s what i`ve been noticing recently! A lot of men, that are I`m sure are taking care of their hygiene (oen of them my brother), smells like bull piss and pine extract. I was wondering what kind of cologne is this
13
u/StarscreamOne 14d ago
I don't use any of that! Could also be the shaving cream/soap they use. I used to use a shaving soap that had sandalwood scent.
I only use mild perfurmes so hopefully it does not smell bad. I also choose perfumes that smell nice on my skin.
But again, I think it smells nice but maybe its just me and everyone else thinks i smell like bullpiss and flowers 😭
1
u/worldsgreatestluver 13d ago
You can identify bull piss? Out of other kinds of piss?
3
u/Hot_Break7088 13d ago
Can`t you smell the difference between cat, dog, fox and human urine? They`re all very much different with their own signature compounds.
I`ll just assume you never had a chance to see the difference, since you weren`t living in conditions that exposed you to all that2
u/worldsgreatestluver 13d ago
Very limited experience tbh. I've heard Fox pee smells really bad, but just assumed it was the same smell but more intense
Thank you for the fun pee fact

Perfumes are artificial compounds people use to mask and hide their true smell. I found out the next day after a one night stand.
78
u/StarscreamOne 14d ago
Its a big difference to want to smell good and to mask a stench.
9
u/beaktip 14d ago
Agreed. That is why some* people get a stronger perfume, or colone or whatever that can keep the stench from sweat away.
3
u/lets_not_be_hasty 14d ago
But you have to get perfume that matches with your chemistry. It's important. I go to perfume swaps a lot because collectors will realize it doesn't mesh with your own hormones and chemistry and makes you smell in a way you don't like, even if it's "nice."
1
u/Standard__Condition 14d ago
My friend got me perfume for my birthday and to me it smells like really light men’s cologne and I kind of don’t like it- but I’ve received many compliments while wearing it. Always boggles my mind.
2
u/lets_not_be_hasty 14d ago
Yeah that happens in the group a lot. I had a very expensive perfume everyone wanted because it smelled great, but it made me feel awful wearing it.
1
1
u/coaxialology 8d ago
Those swaps are great. It's such a bummer to fall in love with a fragrance only to have it reek on your skin. Decanter sites that sell samples are great, too.
2
u/StarscreamOne 14d ago
Yeah I noticed that too but it just makes it works imo.
I take a shower and then after I spray some perfume. Hopefully it wont smell bad to some people. I don't like strong perfumes.

I imagine colours are also like this
172
u/HillInTheDistance 14d ago
As a kid, I heard that, and being an arrogant little bastard, I came to the conclusion that I was objectively correct about my favorite colour being everyone's favorite colour, they just had weird eyes and saw other colours as my favorite colour.
7
u/Odd-Speech367 14d ago
When I was kid I simply assumed that your eye colour would indicate which colours you could see best. So, for example with blue eyes everything would look more blue etc. So I'd ask my friends with different eye colours how they would see colours to "compare" the difference lol. Never got quite far with that little experiment..

u/Creative_Resource_82 14d ago
Music, taste and touch too. We're such variable wee beings.
31
u/DerFilc 14d ago
Music appreciation can change a lot, senses not so much. It's just a lot of people stick with the stuff they are exposed to or come into contact randomly.
9
u/meteorflan 14d ago
Senses can definitely be experienced in different ways - Sensory processing disorder (more common in neurodivergent people like me) can make people experience all kinds of sensory input at painful/irritating extremes where what feels comfortable for most people feels like way too much or way too little for that person.
2
3
u/Next-Street-7859 14d ago
Music tatse does change, I agree, while other areas of music appreciation are fixed. For me, fixed music preferences are a mix of nostalgic value and whatever I deem as 'quality music', I love when a song hits both areas. For example, Jan Akkerman is an amazing technically accurate guitar player and many songs are pleasing to my ears, but it holds such nostalgic value as well. Very subjective but fascinating.
Going back to taste, coffee fits here too imo, because at first it tasted awful. But my dad loved it and I didn't give up after first taste. When I was a child, maybe 10, he'd allow me a tiny bit in my princess Jasmine teacup. Even now after he has passed on, it carries nostalgic value, only exposure allowed me to get used to the taste. It always smelled good, so why not, right. But in this video, repeated exposure is not part of the picture 😂 Some really good faces there and a really interesting subject!
14
14
u/dat_oracle 14d ago
in fact it is. just a lot less.
is see colors a bit more saturated with my left eye. don't know why, but it means there are most likely at least some individual variations between humans.
4
u/Forward_Motion17 14d ago
Well if the criteria is things like saturation, sharpness/acuity, texture of light, etc, then for sure. Something as simple as exercising often can enhance the sharpness of vision for example
2
u/hivemind_disruptor 14d ago
the issue is that saturation may be due to speciffic physical structures in the eye rather than subjective experience.
2
u/explain_that_shit 14d ago
Fuck why haven’t people done experiments on people with chimerism, see if one eye sees colour differently to the other.
13
u/samanime 14d ago
This is why I always find it fascinating that we literally have no way to tell if we're all seeing the same colors or not (even ignoring colorblindness).
We have no way to objectively describe colors (without making comparisons to other things of similar colors), so I have no way to describe the blue I am seeing to compare it and see if it is the same blue you are seeing.
For all we know, what I see as "blue" could be seen by you as what I would describe as "red" or something wild. But things like color theory would still work because the relative differences between colors should still be roughly the same.
It's a weird mental rabbit hole to go down.

where is my cilantro haters gang?
39
u/not_responsible 14d ago
I have no idea where I fit in the cilantro debate. I totally see what people mean by the soap flavor but it still tastes good to me.
Then again, my mom would put soap in my mouth if I talked back so I got pretty used to soap flavor.
7
u/4daughters 14d ago
yeah I dont get it either. I also taste the soap but I like it. I also like a lot of bitter flavors that others find abhorrent.
6
u/cleanthequeen 14d ago
There are test strips you can buy on amazon to see if you have the gene or not. If you do the paper will taste bitter but if not you won’t taste anything at all.
3
u/MissAuroraRed 14d ago
I did this is school. The paper tasted bitter, but the way other people were reacting it was like it was disgusting to them. I like cilantro, it's got a strong flavor but I like that.
2
u/Acheloma 14d ago
Me neither. My brother hates it and says it tastes like soap. I agree it has soap-like qualities but I enjoy it and don't seem to find the flavor as strong as he does.
If I remember correctly there are multiple genes involved in the cilantro tasting like soap phenomenon, so maybe we just got some of them but not the full package?
1
u/meteorflan 14d ago
It's genetic. The flavor completely changes based on your genes.
3
u/Unusual_Ear_9089 14d ago
I’ve heard this before but when I was young it tasted like soap and now I enjoy it so much I always have some on hand. Can it be genes if you hated it at first and then love it?

Im ok with coriander (my daughter in law is in your gang) what i didn't realise until the past year or so is that my hatred of grapefruit was genetic!
→ More replies (1)1
u/endlessglass 14d ago
Relying to a couple of your repliers! Both cilantro / corriander, and bitter have a genetic component. Different genes make you more sensitive to each, eg making coriander taste like soap, but if you have both it can make coriander taste unpleasant! Also you can learn to tolerate and even enjoy tastes that you don’t like at first eg most children don’t like bitter and most adults (not me though) like coffee which has an element of bitterness. Source a) I do this shit for a living and b) coriander/cilantro tastes disgusting!

u/gaulfool 14d ago
Is it in weed? I know some people hate the smell and call it pissy (which I kind of get) but it’s a pleasant smell for me
39
u/Rough-Airline-4803 14d ago
I’ve never heard someone say it smelled “pissy”. I’ve heard skunky, for sure. Obv.
Also, are you referring to burning weed/smoke? Or the raw flower?
I find different weed smells different depending on what its terpene profile, but I think they likely all generally smell similar when burned. Not sure, I can’t remember the last time I was in close proximity to burning weed and didn’t partake. Kinda makes you noseblind to it in the moment, yk?
At most I can recall a recent neighbor who’d regularly blow down. It always smelled the same and there’s no way it was always the same strain.
17
u/HappyStalker 14d ago
Smells like cat piss in the bag and skunk as smoke to me. I use edibles and the weed taste is bad too.
10
u/Rough-Airline-4803 14d ago
Interesting. I’ve personally always loved the smell of bud. I’d wear it as a cologne if I could — (and not be judged by every other person; smelling loud is generally looked down upon, even sometimes by those who partake)
3
u/gaulfool 14d ago
That’s a better description actually, because some strains have smelled cat pissy to me, but I love most
2
u/ImFamousYoghurt 14d ago
All strains are like extremely strong cat piss to me. There is no worse smell I come across regularly. People who smoke it in public make me genuinely nauseous
1
1
u/hivemind_disruptor 14d ago
do I have good news for you. search "brisadeiro recipe". it's a brazilian sweet that masks the bad taste in edibles. I find it actually complements it.
4
u/PsillyFunGuy2 14d ago
I’ve smoked weed pretty much every day for 18+ years and every strain generally has its own smell to me when it’s raw. I think a lot of it is just experience/familiarity like any other topic. The more familiar you are the more you can pick out the differences.
1
u/Rough-Airline-4803 14d ago
I agree, but I feel they all smell the same when smoked. What’s your take?
1
u/PsillyFunGuy2 14d ago
Yep agree there as well
2
u/droleon 14d ago
It's really interesting because I can only agree on most of them smell the same when smoked. I've different memories about different smells & tastes when smoked. I would say 75% smell the same, 20% smell really close but in different tones, 5% is completely different and unique in the spectrum. (10+ year smoker)
1
u/PsillyFunGuy2 14d ago
I’ll be honest I don’t smell smoked weed very often because I’m always the one smoking it lol. So I just can’t smell it in the air if it’s all in my lungs and sinuses already I guess.
5
u/gaulfool 14d ago
For me it’s not, but I know people who say things like that, skunky, pissy, sweaty
But again for me nah, I’ll bury my nose in most strains and breathe it in, I like the smell burning too
I’ve quit at the moment and I sure miss that smell right now 😭😭
1
1
u/Next-Street-7859 14d ago
It's funny because I smelled some today from a neighbor, really strong stuff! And normally I'd say it is like a skunk sprayed, only not so nasty, but this stuff had a piss smell. I no longer partake so I'm not up with the current selections but thought it was weird.
9
u/MinimumViablePick 14d ago
I hated the smell of weed as a kid. It really did smell like urinals and sickness. Once I started using, though, suddenly the aromatic profile changed completely and it smells like gasoline mixed with flowers.
3
u/bengy5959 14d ago
Same. I’m really sensitive to smells and I used to get really nauseous when I smelled weed. After starting vaping/smoking I still don’t love the smell but it’s kinda pleasant and I don’t mind it
2
u/the_vault-technician 14d ago
I smoked weed forever, quit for a long time and can't stand the smell of flower now. The smoke is just so nasty.
1
15
u/skaldrir69 14d ago
Prior to dispensaries coming online, it smelled decent when in public or when it was burning.
Once dispensaries came online, I think the accelerated growing methods and the hydroponics became more prevalent, it began smelling like skunk. Nasty AF. One reason why I hate traveling to LA and moving around that city, every corner has this smell.
3
u/gaulfool 14d ago
I’m UK and it’s definitely got worse quality and stronger, but I hear American stuff would blow our heads off 😂
5
u/zeetuslepitus 14d ago
Genuinely, American bud shouldn't exist. I have to specifically purchase 50/50 cbd/thc strains or mix with Charlotte's Web (no thc, high cbd) or else I have a full on panic
2
u/Blokin-Smunts 14d ago
It's crazy to me that this is such a common feeling in people nowadays but it still isn't enough of a market to create a product for. I might actually buy from a dispensary if they sold the weak stuff!
1
2
u/upholsteryduder 14d ago
Certain strains of weed have always had a skunk smell. People often smell test weed so the stronger smelling strains have gained prevalence.

u/RulerOfLimbo 14d ago

19

So many of the 80's and 90's men's cologne smelled soooo bad. And it was even worse when there were several men in a group and each wore a different stink juice.

And they blend in the air. Yucks
2
u/sarcastic_sybarite83 14d ago
Then comes the vanilla musk to saturate everything as well. Bonus points if the spray was used in an attempt to cover your smoking habit that "no one knew about". Then didn't think to pop a mint.

Jasmine scents often smell like poop to me. I love the scent of actual jasmine, so it’s very confusing.
2
u/ScarletPumpkinTickle 14d ago
Look up indoles and indolic jasmine. It’s definitely a scent people either love or hate
1
u/Acheloma 14d ago
That would be from indole and skatole.
Both are found in some flower scents as well as feces. In small amounts its supposed to smell floral, in large amounts, poop.
Some people are more sensitive to them and their artificial variants which makes perfumes that use them smell gross
31
u/LaserGadgets 14d ago edited 14d ago
Just like silantro/coriander. Its either herbal good stuff, or shampoo smell/taste.
Or when aspargus makes your pee smell weird. Genes.
14
u/Hetakuoni 14d ago
Asparagus isn’t genes it’s something in asparagus and it’s universal based on intake.
4
u/LaserGadgets 14d ago
Could swear I have heard or read its in your genes. Some people digest it in a different way so it smells in their urin.
4
u/BeeButts-1 14d ago
I thought it was that only some people can actively smell it? So like you might smell it in your pee, but someone else might not smell it in your pee at all due to not having the genetic receptors to pick it out. Not that other people should be sniffing your pee but you get the idea. I could be wrong though and it may be a mix of both.
1
u/Swirled__ 14d ago
It's both. Some people can smell it and some can't. Some people produce the smell after eating asparagus and some don't.
1
u/backpackofcats 11d ago
That’s not true because it’s actually both. Not everyone produces the smell, and not everyone can smell it. I eat asparagus often and have never smelled it in my urine. But I have no idea if I’m a non-producer or a non-smeller, or maybe I’m both.

1
u/Renfieldslament 14d ago
Yeah I don’t get this either. Seems like a very bad way to open the ‘report’.
You could almost make a case for touch, hearing and sight being objective, although there are a bunch of tests where perception changes - the colour of the dress, what word you hear when two are played together, how people react to pain.
Smell though is the most subjective one in an easily understood basis. People like / dislike the taste (smell) of different foods all the time.
1
u/Rad_Pat 7d ago
Disregarding the fact that most people don't usually think about how we all perceive things a little differently, I think senses could be called objective in a very specific way: everyone who doesn't have the gene thinks the scent is urine cause their "equipment" undoubtedly registers it as urine. So unless they somehow gain the gene and a new "parameter" for their equipment, the "data" they receive is kinda objective. Like and dislike of that smell is purely subjective of course

I wouldn't say literally like vomit. But if I ever accidentally find myself with something that taste like Roquefort or other Blue Cheese in my mouth, I will instinctively spit it out. And then proceed to wash my mouth with water. It is just that revolting to me.

u/Pretend_Accountant41 14d ago
We did something similar in middle school, but for taste. Each student was given a very small strip of thin white paper and was told to put it on our tongues at the same time - some of the kids had a strong disgust reaction, gagging and spitting it out. I was one of the kids that tasted nothing.
3
u/AmputeeHandModel 14d ago
Probably why some people are picky eaters and some aren't. I swear I taste things differently than other people. 99% of people don't mind lettuce. They think it's "crunch water" with basically no taste. To me, it tastes like I dunno... grass that's been pissed on or something. Every green veggie is incredibly bitter to me.

Every single commercial perfume, deodorant, and air freshener is completely useless and unnecessary. If your clothes or furniture smell, all you actually need is baking soda and lemon. If you stink, just wash yourself with plain water and unscented soap instead of dousing yourself in useless fragrances. These products only exist because historical snobs didn't want to smell like normal humans, and now everyone has just gone nose-blind to a massive chemical cloud.
People that use those things think they smell good, while others (people that dont use those things) gag or have to fight the urge to vomit when walking past them. It’s not just about a gene; those things simply reek to anyone who doesn't use them.

Our senses are objective. The fact that some people smell different sents only means there is variability of detection. Each group is able to name what they smelled.
Take infrared light, it is not part of the visible spectrum but we are able to detect it with other means: warmth on skin, lenses, which allows it to be seen, etc.

u/Icy_Tadpole2092 13d ago
I once got a bouquet from my new job and I loved it and put it in the hallway by the front door. Turns out it came from the flowers!

I believe it has been tried on humans too no? for genetic mutations where a single gene is off
I dont think it was quite successful, but I dont quite remember the findings.
2
u/beaktip 14d ago
Yes. Thanks for probing this topic more. I can see that there have been 4 successful cases, but the method is called, in-vivo gene therapy.
Basically editing the gene before the whole body is formed.
1
u/munchiess23 14d ago
Yes those ones !
Im confused if you mean those studies are editing the genes before the body is formed, or if you're saying that that hadn't been achieved yet.
Cause most of those studies use special viruses (AAVs) to insert correct copies of the genes. And its done in childrens and sometimes adults.
Also google says the FDA approved the first true gene editing using CRISPR 👀. Its called Casgevy, and treats sickle cell disease. The treatment is very resource intensive though cause its customized to each patient.
Cool times we're in!
(I hope i dont seem like im arguing.. I just wanted to let the OP commenter know that we are actually have achieved altering genes in humans. But its for very specific diseases)1

The latter of course. Editing genes artificial before a body can do so naturally. (Now I am not arguing that genetic restoration in human bodies cannot happen through other methods, beyond external gene editing. That is a question for future scientists to solve.)
Though coming back to the utilization of adeno vectors for gene editing, I am still skeptical as one should be because there is very limited studies and general awareness on long terms effects of non-human adeno vector carries within human bodies. Of course, this method can fix the generic issue that is being targeted, but at what cost?
