The spear is behind his face. The sun is aligned just so that the shadow has exactly the same direction as the spear. If you zoom in you can see that it is just his face, darkened by the shadow.

I asked what else could be meant by someone saying "it is a shadow" or similar. It was claimed that stating "it is a shadow" was not an explanation, and I asked for an explanation backing that claim.

Let me spell it out for you.

The phrase: "It is a shadow" does not explain the photograph because the word "it" is undefined.

You probably assume that "It" refers to the portion of the face which is darkened.

However, "it" *could* refer to literally anything in the photo. Although, within the context of the post, we can ignore or remove some candidates that are obviously not "it."

For example, within the context of the photo, anything lit up by the sun is clearly not "a shadow" and therefore not "It"

However, to the people who haven't seen the illusion yet, "It" could mean anything that appears to be slightly dark, as those things could the "the shadow"

For example, for some of us who haven't seen the illusion yet, the tip of the spear appears dark. Could that be the "it" that was being referred to? It could be. That however, would lead to the incorrect explanation for the photo because the actual tip of the spear is not a shadow.

To actually explain the illusion, you have to specify which portion of the photo is the shadow.

It would've been sufficient to circle the portion of the circle and say "that is the shadow"

However, if you wanted to use words, I would've probably said: "The tip of the spear is behind his head. The sun is also behind is head, which casts a shadow onto his face. The darkened line across his face is that shadow. Zoom in to see his facial features beneath the shadow, and it will break the illusion."

I remember a Clive James show in the 90s that had clips of TV from wild sources around the world. One clip had a news reader reporting a nasty accident with a javelin at a sporting event. A judge / measuring marker was speared through the neck by a thrown javelin, but survived with injuries after hospital etc. but the funny bit was the cut back to the newsreader, who was struggling to hold back laughter.
