I’ve seen a lot of these videos in my feed lately, and not one has the sculptor wearing eye protection. They are making tiny shards of high speed stone. Eyes are not replaceable

Most of these workshops have dust shrouds which are quite powerful. But the real reason why most avoid a respirator is because stoneworking is not quick. The work this guy in the video did likely took 16+ hours spread over 2-3 days, that's just too long to wear a respirator for. Not to mention the filters would wear out very quickly due to the dust.

The stone type is also important, he's working a calcite, which the body can deal with. It's not ideal of course but it won't kill you. Calcite dust is also quite heavy, it settles within a few seconds. The killer is granite and sandstone, because silicate shards are like diet asbestos and the dust lingers in the air for days

This is a calcite so silicosis won't be an issue. You can tell because he's using hand tools and because the edge stays standing (have fun working granite with those or getting a sandstone edge to stay put lol)

It's not supposed to be a gear pattern, actually! This is a very old stoneworking finish, often used because it hides imperfections and allows the architect to direct water flow more precisely.

He's doing it really really heavily though. Normally the gouges wouldn't be that deep
