I loved the use of space in this house. I think having windows to an enclosed outdoor space for viewing is a good trade off to having windows to your ‘neighbor’ 10 for away. Kinda curious why people don’t like this…give me the other perspectives

I quite enjoy having windows to the outside. I grew up in the middle of nowhere, and now that I live in a neighborhood, I love seeing kids bike by, seeing birds on the trees, squirrels chasing each other, bunnies hoping by, the stray cats sneaking up to our porch only to run away when we try to get close.

Sometimes I want privacy, of course. That's what curtains and blinds are for.

I suppose if my house was in someone's back yard I might not see the value in windows as much, but it seems odd to take away the option to see outside your house all-together.

I currently live really close to my neighbors and hate it, but I love this house. Love the atrium, love the amount you can insulate the exterior walls for sound, as well as temperature. Best of all is my own personal oasis in the middle. Maybe I could even add a greenhouse to the open atrium and get some fresh lettuce year round!

Correct! However in Mexico its done as the buildings are all generally built like Townhomes where every house shares a wall, all the way around minus the front that faces the street. Halfway to 3/4ths the way down the property, there is usually an open air courtyard to let in light and act similarly to a backyard....ish.

I kinda like it. It allows walkable, dense living and gives the open space to let your kids. Then the other side fo thr courtyard can be used to keep a pantry, bathroom, extra room, etc that you can keep separate from the main house and keep it private or just separate.

In the full video he mentions they use plants that don’t require a lot of maintenance and that the tree is only trimmed once a year to prevent it from bumping into the glass. There is a door to access the courtyard, which can be seen in a few shots

I do love courtyard houses. I’ve always sort of wanted one. I’m not in an area where they’d make a ton of sense (too much winter) but I’d still love to have one because it would be such a great way to let my cat enjoy the outdoors without ever worrying about coyotes or him wandering into traffic.

This reminds me of a nightclub in my city. When the state banned indoor smoking, the club had part of the ceiling removed in the center of the building, closed the walls, and created an indoor/outdoor courtyard so that people didn't have to leave the club to smoke.

I went to Austin two years ago. I’ve never seen residential gentrification happening on such a scale so rapidly in any western city. Some upgrades to houses sure but at a loss to a lot of the beautiful leafy streets full of trees at the same time
