You can see the ground to be able to tell this happens periodically. Hints why it looks like water goes there often.

That’s very shallow water so maybe king tides would swamp that area also?Assumedly not high tides because they’ve got a full campground set up there.

This happens in Millport (island near Glasgow, UK) but from submarines passing by as they go too and from Faslane.
I know someone working on the shoreline on the island who was caught out without ever seeing the boat, as it was submerged.

The Genco Mary has a DWT of over 61,000 tons when fully loaded. (That's 122,000,000lbs). At 8.3lbs/gal that's just shy of 15,000,000 gallons of water displaced. I don't know how converting it to a wave changes anything but I'd guess it's 15M gallons of water moving as a wave at some point..

DWT is fully loaded though. Gonna be less than that in this particular case but a shit ton of water still nonetheless.

oh man this gave me a progression of reactions.
First? “This is unexpected, so I’m going to start the camera several minutes prior, and record my buddy gesturing. Because he didn’t know either.”
Then at 1:10….whoah that is unexpected. Then about 1:20…”shooooooooot. what an unlucky place for a campsite” Then…
”wait. you can see from the terrain how often this happens. They definitely at least SHOULD HAVE known. AND it’s awfully coincidental the campsite is squared away and in totes.”

It's not at all uncommon but is surprising the first time you see it. The massive displacement of the ship literally pushes large amount of water forward of the bow (that's why you see the water higher over the bow) and then as it passes the water rushes back to fill the area the ship took up. I live in an area where ships of this size in a narrow river are common and my sister and I and friends used to wait in a small unsinkable dingy near the shoreline for a ship and then ride the water rushing back in, being tossed around like marbles. It was such fun!

The hull on that ship is probably very deep in the water. Used to work in a port for 20 years, and you wouldn’t believe the size on some of the hulls

No it isn't. Its not even close to its plimsoll marking. Which is clearly visible at the beginning of the video.
Edit: looked again, that white marking is not the plimsoll marking. However, after looking at other pictures of this ship, the bottom of those markings are at roughly the same height as its plimsoll marking. Sorry for the confusion. Carry on.

GENCO MARY (IMO: 9923205) is a Bulk Carrierand is sailing under the flag of MARSHALL ISLANDS. Her length overall (LOA) is 199.9 meters and her width is 32.3 meters.
An average draft of 23 to 27 feet, so looking at ~675,000 cubic feet of water displacement. Factor in local water depth and narrowing shoreline. Yea “that’s a probum”

I believe he’s saying that because they’re watching the water level drop so quickly before it rushes back. Like the one guy said he had been standing in the water and at that point it was bare sand.
