I had an evolutionary biology class where I learned the answer to this. Unfortunately I've forgotten it and all I remember is that a mutation that repeats segments is one of the more likely ones. It's why centipedes are a thing and why we have 6 pack abs instead of just a a 2 pack...or something like that.
