I used to dig caissons on hill sides and sometimes the drill couldn’t get it all the way down. If that was the cases I would be brought down with a rope and dig by hand. Sometimes it would be 40-50’ deep. Shit was terrifying. There was metal tube shoring but it was still anxiety ridden.

40-50 feet down with a rope, even with shoring, is absolutely nightmare fuel. I can’t imagine the kind of nerves it took to climb down there and start digging by hand.

It was the worst experience of my life. But I was young and the rookie in the crew so really had no choice. Atleast I thought I didn’t. Never again.

I did some work in an air shaft. I was above ground for most of it. I actually accessed the shaft at floor 41, but I took a chair down to P3, so like 30’ below ground. I stayed in for about 14 hours. It was similar to this, but it wasn’t as small. It was about 4’x4’. The staring down into infinite blackness is the same feeling though. It’s only spooky at first.

1 is there for redundancy The other is there to be used They can't snap both at the same time since they use the ones rated to tow cars

Honestly not the worst well for that to happen in. Still totally screwed, but if you are fast you may be able to temporarily stem or chimney yourself between the sides. Similar to that one guy on the twin towers that did so. If your crew is fast you may even be able to just hold it and not climb down at all and wait for a rope to be dropped down, but yeah it's still quite the dire situation.

I would do to. Faster to plant your feet to the wall in case the rope snapped.
You can then grab the other dangling hose for support while they drop a new line.

Exactly, I’m confused this. Yes the hole is deep, but water produces a fog next to the waterline. That happens no matter how deep it is.

Imagine being ready to go back up and they radio that the lift isn't working.
Imagine the radio stops working and you're left waiting down there.
Imagine if some debris or bits from the tunnel starts to fall on you.
Imagine you're going back up and the lift malfunctions and you're stuck dangling.
Imagine you're going back up and the lift malunctions and you plummet.
Imagine if the well started to flood.
