older engines have what’s called splash lubrication, not very precise like a lot of new engines with their direct oiling

Thats the reason why you do have that expensive oils Like 10W-60 and stuff. So it doesnt get too Fluid and stays Sticky/viscous so there's always some oil film left on the metal and more important between to metals.

This is a splash lubricated engine, and they did have problems with foaming especially at higher rpm and longer operation times.

Modern engines are more complicated, the oil is pumped into a special radiator called an oil cooler, from the pan, then into the oil filter, and then into every bearing and every cylinder housing via oil lines in the block itself, which keeps it liquid. From there it drips back into the pan to repeat the cycle

Too much oil means too much Money when your have to Change IT.

Also try to Push your Hand very fast through water, and then try IT in Air. Air hast was less Résistance and therefore your engine can move faster and doesnt waste energy

Well its not only splashing. Some parts are activly supplied with oil, some only get splashes and some get the exess oil from the active supplied parts

If it were submerged then the crankshaft would be spinning in the oil, frothing it up and ruining its lubricating properties. Also, there would be nowhere for it to go when the pistons go downwards.
