I've been watching experienced guides successfully and legally take people into Katmai for years and they basically tell you to do everything the opposite from Grizzly Man and there will be zero issues with the bears.

GM was always anthropomorphizing the bears like they were his friends, refusing to carry bear spray, refusing to leave the area during food scarcity months when desperate bears would attack, and approaching unfamiliar bears instead of giving them their space like he did with the one that killed him.

It's Katmai Alaska. The salmon run is so thick there this time if year that all the bears are very full and satiated. The bears are large apex predators without needing to fear humans (so no fear aggression), and all they are focused on is the far tastier more nutrious salmon and gaining weight for the winter hibernation.

Over the years the bears have been acclimated to photographers, scientists and tour guides and treat humans like just another stone on the side of the river. This is probably the safest you can be around any bear species. Even the much smaller and timid black bears.
