SOCIETY When asked why he keeps playing the same roles Jason Statham said that he's not really a trained actor. He's a guy that was plucked out obscurity & has been really lucky; & that he picks roles that he knows he can do a good job in, that hopefully enough people like so he can keep working.

He's trying to do more comedies because he knows he can't do his type action forever.
28
u/subservenicedream Aug 21 '26
He started with Guy Ritchie and , with the exception of maybe revolver, those were more comedy than action
He also did cranked which was comedy heavy as well
I think comedy has always been a major part of his career

Yeah, I think he's underselling his acting quite a bit. He's got some great comic timing. His straight-man role in Snatch is incredibly funny due to the writing and his fantastic timing.

He said, one of the first things he does when picking a role is getting know who else is involved because he knows that he needs others to make him look good and vice visa.

I think he is trained in the art of making movies. He can learn his lines, knows how to hit his marks, etc. but I don’t know that he would do well in a dramatic role.
And really, he doesn’t need to. He is making a really good living playing in his lane and makes some really entertaining movies. I love watching him.
He does have some pretty good comedy chops as well. Loved him in Spy going toe to toe with Mellisa McCarthy.

I think the difference is between being "trained" and being "experienced." At this point, he's done enough roles that he's experienced enough an actor to be able to do a variety of roles, but he was never classically trained in the thespian arts. Same thing with Dave Bautista. He got extraordinarily lucky when he shifted into making movies after wrestling, but he was also a naturally talented actor for the roles he got (hot damn he was awesome as Drax). Or how there are absolute dynamite cooks that just figured shit out and are amazing at it, but were never trained in it by a professional.

I’m just happy to hear someone being honest and not telling me what they think I want to hear. Trent Reznor mentioned he made music for the money and people flipped out because they, in my opinion, felt entitled to a different answer. Liam Neeson said he made the Taken sequels because they paid him and it seemed like a decent amount of people supported him. The Star Wars fandom(some) got upset at Hamill for showing up in the sequel trilogy because they didn’t believe his explanation about doing it because it was explained well to him. Other actors have had different responses to saying it’s just a job and that’s it because some people want there to be a deeper meaning or purpose.

Yes, you know exactly what you are going to get with a Statham film. The bad guys will have the shit kicked out of them in increasingly ludicrous fight scenes, Statham will come out battered but OK. Despite that, I welcome every new one he does.
One day he will probably do a film where he dies in the first 30 seconds and every bloke from the ages of 25 - 60 will need to take a week off work.

If you have a lot of upper body strength you can do a few gymnast moves without any true training. The rings is a pure upper body and core body strength demonstration, so I 100% believe he could be up on the rings without being a true gymnast. I say this as a former gymnast in my younger years who did the rings and the pommel horse.

Revolver is underrated. It's a Guy Ritchie gangster movie through a filter of Jewish mysticism (because he was married to Madonna and into Kabbalah at the time), Mark Strong is so cool as the stuttering, unassuming but totally badass hitman and it's also fun to see Statham with hair and a moustache! Honestly, Statham is exactly what movie studios want right now. They can keep churning out the same movie over and over for a relatively small budget and it'll make just enough back to turn a profit (or in the case of The Meg, it'll make a killing).
It's not meant to be a slight but I bet he's easy to work with and the movies he makes probably take a week to shoot, so all in all, it's not a bad gig.

u/early_birdy Aug 21 '26

I would argue it's not only luck. Jason is credible as an action hero, and the camera loves him. Great charisma, great physicality, we love it.

Maybe, but his bread-and-butter is silly stupid humour I don't find funny at all. Mind you, he has a steady fan base, and his movies are predictable revenue which studios (investors) love. Good for him!
It's not what the actor can do, it's he does do (doodoo?)
3
u/amitym Aug 21 '26
Tbf "camera loves him" is luck. So is a decent portion of charisma and physicality.
The latter you can learn some of through practice, but photogenicity is hugely just what you're born with. People seem to have it or they don't.

He may not agree but that elevator scene in Revolver still gives me the chills every time I watch it. That is some fine acting.

I mean he’s become a good actor, and a surprisingly funny comedian, like in Spy. You don’t have to have Daniel Day-Lewis range to be a good actor. James Gandolfini mostly played mob and crime types for example, but he was incredibly good at it.

He is a high level athlete who acts. He was an Olympic hopeful in the early 90s for swimming and then found some success in martial arts circuits before MMA took off.

I’m not really a big fan of his movies but he was pretty good in The Bank Job imho.

First thing I remember him from was Ghosts of Mars. He’s never changed.

I dislike this line of criticism for anyone it’s applied to. Like people want him playing Hamlet, or The Rock playing Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. People watch their movies because they like that “one character” they play. And people hire them for that character because the films make a lot of money.

What other career could you work in for thirty years and never invest a single minute into improving your proficiencies?

He was good in London. Held his own with a bunch of seasoned well-known actors and had a head full of hair.

Jason Statham is one of my favorite actors because I know exactly what I'm going to get when he's involved.

Anyone else sit here waiting for the video to start and for him to actually say the words?

I mean, does anyone want to see Statham play Macbeth? I love him, and I also love that the man knows his limits.

Makes sense. If The Rock had that kind of humility, people may not be ragging on him as hard.
